Is it time to tune into a new radio station?

“At every point in time,
there are infinite possibilities
and a parallel reality exists for each possibility.”
–Daniel Jackson, Stargate

Imagine this? A foreign exchange student from a tiny African village with no running water or electricity comes to the West and gets dropped off at a hotel room. The hotel maid, who has a giant crush on George Strait and loves to listen to the local country and western station, forgot to turn off the radio when she finished tidying up the room. Hours later, the student walks into his first hotel room ever to find a radio playing non-stop country and western music and loud, obnoxious ads.

He much prefers the drumming of his little village, but unfortunately he has no idea that a) the radio has an off switch or b) that, at any time, he could simply move the dial to a different, more pleasing station.

Hopefully, the above scenario has never happened, but it’s a perfect metaphor for life. An extensive line-up of music stations with an immense variety of options is available for anyone with a car, a boom box or a computer with Pandora.

Life, too, offers a dizzying choice of consciousness options. We can choose joyful thoughts or thoughts of fear. We can choose to celebrate or worry. The station we tune into is completely up to us. It’s the most important decision we ever make. Our consciousness channels create the quality of our life.

Most of us are like the exchange student, stuck on one channel and unaware that, at any time, we could pick a different reality. We are the captains of our fate, the master of our mind’s channels that all too often get stuck on an endless loop.

Before long, we start believing that reality is nothing but the loud, obnoxious C&W station playing in our consciousness. We fail to realize that a) there’s an off-switch, b) there are lots of other channels and c) the world only appears the way it does because, in our ignorance, we chose the wrong channel. Isn’t it time to change the dial?

Why I’m the luckiest person on the planet, Episode 14

“Eventually you will see that the real cause of problems is not life, but the commotion the mind makes about life.”—Michael Singer http://angieaway.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/pura-vida-costa-rica-1.jpeg

I’m in Costa Rica, on a Pacific beach, hanging out with my daughter, writing my new book.

But that’s not why I’m the luckiest person on the planet. I’m immensely blessed because of all of you. You guys so rock! I’ve said it before, but I constantly feel like Sally Field when she gushed, “You like me, you really like me.”

So thank you for being so generous and kind and well, liking me and my running bra thoughts from the last post. It really blew me away. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I’m also constantly wowed by the cool stories you send that only add add further proof that the universe adores us all and is trying like bloody hell to point that out.

Here’s a story from Hillary from Toronto:

“I recently took my first vacation by myself to Paris. It was a last minute decision. I was at a work conference in Amsterdam. I was a little nervous that I’d be alone the entire time…especially during dinners!

“I do daily manifestations all the time because I love seeing them turn up in joyful ways. On the Sunday I arrived, I chose yellow bows to manifest. Sunday goes by and nothing, but I was exploring the Parisian streets so no big deal. Monday goes by…still no yellow bows…but I was having a great time none the less. I met some nice ladies at dinner.

“Tuesday I did a food tour, and it was awesome! My tour guide invited me for drinks after and helped me get to my next destination, the Catacombs! I still wanted my yellow bows though 😉

“She took me to the subway and explained how to get there. While I was on the subway, this guy in colorful attire noticed I looked confused as I stared at the mass intertwining of subway lines for the Paris underground. He asked where I was going and if I needed help.

Turned out he and his bandmates were going to the Catacombs as well, they were from L.A. (on a side note ever since I started pursuing being a musician, I am a musical magnet lol). I had such a great time with these guys, especially the colorful one that first approached me.

His name was Sal. We had a special connection immediately and spent the rest of the day and night together and decided to remain friends. Can you guess what color his shoe laces were?”

Big, bright yellow bows.

I’m offering a new experiment in the Hay House World Summit that begins May 9. If you register now, you’re entitled to five free videos. Hope to “see you” there.

Are you smokin’ what you’re selling?

“I believe reality is a marvelous joke staged for my edification and amusement and everybody is working very hard to make me happy.”– Terence McKenna

Elizabeth Gilbert used that phrase in a Facebook post that was brought to my attention the other Sunday by my power posse. I mentioned how, during my February workshop in Switzerland, I freaked out because I’d run out of material by Saturday afternoon when I still had Sunday to go.

Speaking in public, up until now, has been one of my demons, one of the last “stories” I seem to protect. My heart races, my fears start jabbering and my thoughts get to moving so fast that I’ve considered buying them a training bra.

A couple of marvelous women from the workshop in Bern (one was a banker, the other, a mystery writer) invited me for drinks and dinner Saturday night. My old self, the one with the running bra thoughts, would have declined. After all, I needed to go back to my hotel room and work diligently on tomorrow’s workshop.

But if I was truly “smokin’ what I was selling,” I would go for the joy and the fun and trust the universe.

I took the hit! I went for drinks and dinner, had a marvelous time and woke up to the Divine serendipity of great ideas for Sunday’s workshop. It went great!!!

Last Sunday, I spoke in Denver at the I Can Do It! conference. Same crazy running bra thoughts, same fear.

It went quite well. Or at least I thought so. I got lots of rave reviews and a long line of people wanting me to sign books. I felt good. I went out to celebrate with two old college friends.

But that night, when I returned to my hotel room, an email popped into my inbox from a woman who had attended the workshop.

She said she was disappointed. She was writing, she said, to help me, to point out how uncomfortable I seemed and how I wasn’t the caliber of the other speakers.

Needless to say, my crazy thoughts had a field day. They even urged me to ignore one of my chief Course in Miracles lessons–“In my defenseless my safety lies.” I was tempted to write her back to ask, “And this helps me how?”

I also considered canceling all my upcoming gigs. But then I remembered another one of the things I “sell.”

If you don’t like the way your lipstick looks in the mirror, it’s pointless to fix it on the actual mirror. You have to fix it in yourself where’s it’s actually fixable.

I realized that as long as I still “yammered on” about my fears of public speaking, I was going to continue to see that reality in the mirror. She was just voicing that part of myself that still believes the old story, that still thinks criticizing myself will somehow improve me.

And I realize that those critical running bra voices offer NOTHING helpful. I just need to observe them. And love myself anyway.

What I say to old beliefs in lack and limitation? You’re going down!

“A miracle is an invitation into a new story.”—Charles Eisenstein

In E-Cubed, I included a whole chapter of miracle stories. I recounted some of the gifts and blessings readers sent after doing the experiments in E-Squared. I named the chapter “Well, Duh!”

I like to share miracle stories because they shake the scaffolding of our old beliefs. They threaten the old paradigm that we’re all alone in an uncaring universe.

Here’s a fun story that popped into my inbox last night:

“God really does have a sense of humor. One day my friend and I were talking about money, and my friend Karen says, “It’s easy to manifest money. Just picture it falling from the sky.

I thought, that sounds like fun. . .so I closed my eyes and pictured money falling from the sky.

Later that day, I got a call from my agent to do some extra work in a movie for the following day.
In the scene, a Brinks truck was stalled on an overpass, the door had flown open, and money was flying about.

I was to be one of several passersby, underneath the bridge, catching money as it fell from above.”

Take that, old story!

World’s best “how-to” book not found in the self-help section

“Your opinion of yourself becomes your reality. If you have all these doubts, no one will believe in you and everything will go wrong. If you think the opposite, the opposite will happen. It’s that simple.”
–50 Cent

My favorite how-to book will never be found in the self-help section of the bookstore. It was written long before the term self-help was even coined.

It’s a children’s book called Harold and the Purple Crayon and it rivals Oprah when it comes to addressing the possibilities of the human condition.

Written by Crockett Johnson in 1955, this little 65-page masterpiece tells the story of a little boy named Harold who decides to go out for a walk one evening. When there isn’t any moonlight (and, of course, everyone knows a good walk requires moonlight), Harold just takes out his purple crayon and draws the moon.

He also needs a sidewalk (which he draws) that leads to a forest (he only draws one tree because he doesn’t want to get lost) that turns out to be an apple tree (or at least it is after Harold’s crayon gets ahold of it). Unfortunately, the apples aren’t ripe yet, so Harold draws a frightening dragon to guard the tree.

When he falls into the ocean, Harold is able to grab his wits and his purple crayon to draw a boat and set sail for a beach, where he draws a picnic lunch with nine kinds of pie.

The whole book is about Harold’s great adventures scaling a mountain, soaring in a hot-air balloon and touring a city, all created by his ever-faithful purple crayon.

It’s a powerful book because it demonstrates a great spiritual truth—we are the authors of our own lives. We draw every detail—even the dragons and the oceans we “accidentally” fall into.

Harold could have gone on his walk, noticed there was no moon and sat down and pouted. Isn’t that what most of us do? “Damn, no moon. Better call my therapist, hit some pillows.” Or he could have drawn his moon, compared it to El Greco, and said, “I’m a hopeless sham. What was I thinking? Me? An artist?”

Instead, he kept reaching for his purple crayon and drawing every event, every answer, every friend he needed. We all have that power.

Harold was only a kid. He hadn’t yet lost his imagination, his sense of wonder and awe. No one had explained yet that he couldn’t have whatever he wanted. As long as he had his purple crayon, he could ride the universe.

Remember that big box of Crayolas with the 64 awesome colors? With that one small gold and green box you could have absolutely anything-—navy blue carousels with peach prancing ponies, magenta castles with yellow-green drawbridges, puffy white clouds and purple grass although your teacher might have frowned on that kind of thing. “Grass is green, don’t you know.”

Each year of school, the Crayola stash gets smaller. By the time we graduate from high school, we’re wielding nothing but a blue Bic for figuring our checking account.

Let’s go out this week and get some crayons. Let’s create our world the way we want it. And if we happen to fall into an ocean or run into a dragon, we’ll just draw ourselves a lifeboat and head for the beach, where at least one kind of pie will be waiting.

Shazam or Suffering Succotash: you decide

“Happiness is where you start from rather than where you go. God, I sound like Yoda.”—Simon Pegg

I’m so excited. I leave for Denver in two hours for my first North American “I Can Do It.” I’m speaking on Sunday if you can make it.

Another cool thing is my episode with Nick and Jessica Ortner on “Adventures with Happiness” went live yesterday. You can check it out here. I previewed it last night and I sound a bit daft, but, hey, I’m going for it despite my imperfections.

And speaking of Jessica (who I adore), I’m re-running a blog post with her magic word. Enjoy:

In E-Cubed I talk about the power of words, how we literally foretell and create the future by what we say. When we talk smack about our lives, even little things like, “Oh, I wish I’d gotten up earlier and wasn’t running so late. I wish that idiot in traffic hadn’t cut me off,” we are creating a resonant field of problems.

But since I believe we should take our attention off problems and animate a different possibility from the infinite field, I’d like to tell you about two words I have just added to my vocabulary.

The first is “Shazam!” I’d heard this word before. Captain Marvel uses it when transforming into his superself. But I just had breakfast with the awesome Jessica Ortner (from the Tapping Solution) and she told me that she and her friends always “shazam” each other as a way of sending positive energy.

For example, Anita Moorjani (who was at breakfast with us—Am I a lucky camper or what?) is finding out today whether or not her extraordinary person visa for the U.S. will come through. Jessica sent some Shazam her way!

The other word I learned is brand new, or was when Phil Parker made it up. He’s a brilliant London osteopath who is able to transform we humans’ “issues” seemingly overnight.

And it starts with the word du with a ^ over the “u.” Instead of saying “I am angry” or “I am poor” or “I am…. (whatever you don’t want to be) say, I am du^ing anger or I am du^ing poor which makes it a temporary state. It reduces the charge.

The reason he chose not to use the word “do” is because that reeks of blame. Last thing any of us want to do is point finger at ourselves. That’s what started the “issues” in the first place.

Two tiny words—huge possible change.

The Top 5 Perks of Brazen Gratitude

“Thank you is the best prayer anyone could ever say.”—Alice Walker

Frequent flyers to this blog already know I’m playfully at work on a new book about the superpower of gratitude. So thought I’d rerun a post from last year on that very topic. Enjoy!

I just finished a story called “Training to Be Superman” for Men’s Journal. It includes six over-the-top endurance competitions for earning your cape. It was fun to write, sorta tongue-in-cheek, but it got me to thinking that of all the superpowers, gratitude is my superpower of choice. And it comes with all kinds of perks. Here are my top five:

1. Gratitude is a magic seed. It starts small, but it grows whatever you’re noticing into a super-size reality. Lettuce seeds are tiny, but they grow into these big green, nourishing leaves. By noticing even one tiny thing you like about an unpleasant situation, you can grow it into a giant green leaf of love.

2. Gratitude improves family relationships. Being happy is contagious and quickly spreads to your inner circle.

3. Gratitude brings you back to ultimate reality. It’s pretty easy to veer off track, to think “life sucks and then you die.” But when you stop for a moment and write a list of things you’re grateful for, you suddenly remember. “Oh, yea! Life is truly sweet.” As Adyashanti reminds us, “Reality is life without our distorting stories, ideas, and beliefs.” And when we’re grateful, those stories, ideas and beliefs don’t stand a chance.

4. Gratitude makes you happy. It makes you want to dance which, for those hoping to lose weight, is a pretty good technique.

5. Gratitude is the perfect superpower for any celebration. And since today is T.G.I.W. (It’s like T.G.I.F for Wednesdays), keep in mind that gratitude is even more potent than a cocktail.

How to win a free trip to Ireland

“If your mind isn’t cluttered by unnecessary things, this could be the best day of your life.”—From a message left on my voicemail by The Zing of the Possibility Alliance

Some authors write about changing your life through healthy eating. Or meditating. Others suggest writing affirmations or visualizing

As for me, I offer one easy message: Open your joy channels.

When you get happy, the largesse of the universe can’t help but rush in.

It’s so easy that most people walk right by it, they roll their eyes and think, “Sure, Pam! It can’t be that easy.”

So I’ll say it one more time. It really IS that easy.

In my power posse yesterday, we had a blast sharing stories about just this topic. We decided that part of our mission and why we love this group SO FRICKIN’ MUCH is because we take time to register, to note, to document (well, we don’t really write it down) how frequently the universe works in our favor.

Frank brought in a stuffed monkey (says he’s doing the extra credit from Experiment One in E-Cubed), Nikki told us about the free pizza she won after taking the day off work and Rhonda shared this story that clearly demonstrates the awesome fact that celebrating life brings more to celebrate.

She and her husband, an architect, went to an awards banquet at a small Catholic college where he’s doing some design work. Sitting behind them was a table of eight or so nuns. They were all somewhere between 60 and 90 years old, Rhonda said

“Now, I’ve been to lots of these banquets and they’re always nice, polite affairs. But at this one, after all the awards had been given and the ceremonies had commenced, a DJ came out and started playing dance music,” Rhonda said. “My jaw nearly dropped.”

And as Kool and the Gang started in with “Celebrate Good Times,” those nuns got up and started dancing. Really getting into it.

“They didn’t sit down once,” Rhonda said. “And then the emcee got up to pull a name out of the hat for the grand prize trip to Ireland.”

You guessed it?

“Mary Katherine!” One of the “We’re gonna have a good time tonight” nuns.

If you’re anywhere near Denver this coming weekend, Rhonda and I will be at the Hay House “I Can Do It” conference. I’m giving a workshop on Sunday and we’re both psyched about meeting Wayne Dyer, Louise Hay (we’re affirming she’s going to make a surprise appearance), Cheryl Richardson and all the other cool Hay House authors. It’s not too late to get a ticket.

And in the meantime, tell me in the comments section below what you’re going to do today to “Celebrate Good Times.”

Tragedy, chaos and unhappiness are an unfortunate rumor we can throw overboard at any time

“Emancipate yourself from mental slavery. None but ourselves can free our minds.”
–Bob Marley

Most of us think life is some sort of boot camp for heaven. We believe this short life span is “only a test” for the paradise we’re eventually going to earn. If we hang on and bear up, we’ll someday walk through those pearly gates and be happy. These errors in thinking have been condensed into living facts. Nothing is plainer than the inevitably of sorrows and trials.

But what if it isn’t necessary? What if tragedy, chaos and unhappiness are nothing but a rumor, cemented into our consciousness by years and years of conditioning?

What I’d like to suggest is this heaven you’re waiting for is available now. And that you’ve been sold a bill of goods about who you are and what is possible.

The way I see it, there are only four reasons we aren’t all joyous, loving and free.

1. We didn’t know we could be.

2. We didn’t ask.

3. We don’t use our mind power properly. If you’ve ever been in a sailboat, you know that unless you hold the sails in the right position, you’re pretty much stuck paddling in circles. The wind, like your mind is a potent energy source, but it won’t take you anywhere until you learn the proper way to use it.

4. We have a thing about drama. Ever wonder why rollers coasters are so popular? Why movies like Alien v. Predator boost ticket sales? C’mon, admit it. You crane your neck around to see those mangled bodies lying there along the side of the road after a car accident. You actually like being a little off-kilter and guess what? As long as you enjoy this, you get to have it.

This may be a hard pill to swallow, but we—you and me—made the mess we call material reality.

If you look very closely as what we politely assume to be the building blocks of the universe, you’ll discover they’re dicey at best. Or to put it another way, since renowned physicist Brian Greene is much better at explaining these thing than I am, “quantum fluctuations so mangle space and time that the conventional ideas of left/right, backward/forward, up/down and before/after become meaningless.”

In other words, we experience war and global warming because that’s what we’ve come to expect, what we think of as reality. We created these disasters with our angry, fearful consciousness. The exciting thing about this truth (that it’s us, not some random misogynist named God) is that another way IS possible. We do not have to accept war and sickness and injustice. We, by changing our consciousness, can create a peaceful world that works for everyone. In fact, looking for anything else is irresponsible.

Invite the Universe to show up in living color

“Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact: Everything you call life was made up by people no smarter than you.”—Steve Jobs

As some of you know, I’m full swing into writing my next book. Despite the persistent rumors, it will not be called E-Quadrangle. But it’s in the same vein. It’s a book on the energy of gratitude. It’s a very powerful frequency that moves you in range of the mothership.

It won’t hit bookstores until next year. But it’s a great joy to be marinating in the juices of joy and the universe’s unending largesse.

If you have any great stories on how gratitude changed your life, I’d love to hear them. In the meantime, the stories from E2 and E3 continue to pour in. Here’s one from Sheryl Howard:

“Just wanted to say thank your for E-squared and give you a report from Experiment 1: The Dude Abides! I contemplated by-passing this particular experiment because I know he does! He has made himself evident to me through out my life. But because I wanted the full experience of your book, I decided I wouldn’t just let that one pass by. My “demand:” Present yourself to me! IN LIVING COLOR!

“The next morning I woke up and reminded “Him” that I’d be watching!! By the time I’d left my home to head to work, I decided he responded pretty fast – I can’t even remember what made me think that, just something early on that I was grateful for and I figured that was it. Through out my day, over and over again I continued to feel like he was presenting himself to me in little things.

“As I laid down to sleep that night, I decided I’d do it with no TV and no self improvement guru speaking to me through my iTunes or any other way. I just allowed myself to drift off in the dark thinking about how grateful I am for the life I have. The next day, (which was yesterday), I contemplated going on to Experiment #2 but decided to let the 48-hrs play out from experiment #1.

“Yesterday evening I got an invite to go on a boat ride with a couple of friends. I’ve known these people for a few years and this was the first time I got such an invite. I am 50 years old and have wanted a boat for as long as I can remember and in fact, am in the process of having one inspected that I may purchase if all is well with the inspection.

“Anyway – my friends invite me to go on this boat ride and of course, I say YES! Its still day light when we leave their wharf but the 2 1/2 hr ride brought us from pretty light blue skies with bright yellowy orange sunshine and vibrant green landscape (cypress trees) to hues of pink and yellow as the sun started to set all the way to the dark black skies of the night with bright sparkling stars scattered across it and the glow of the moon forcing its way from behind a few gray clouds with reflections of light dancing on the water. It was amazing. IN LIVING COLOR! And as if that wasn’t enough, a symphony of seagulls accompanied the view with their praises to the creator.

“Thank you Pam! I can’t wait for Experiment #2! Starting today! Have a Great Day!’
