Dr. Christiane Northrup is right: Goddesses Never Age

“There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age.”―- Sophia Lorenimage1

This is a blog post for anyone who has ever picked up a woman’s magazine to find out what their body can be expected to do when they’re 30 or 40 or 50. With the help of “medical experts,” these magazines will tell you when your metabolism is expected to decrease, when your skin is expected to lose moisture and when your hair is expected to thin.

Talk about creating an affirmation!

This blog post is for those looking for a different kind of affirmation. The kind that says, “Aging is nothing but a story, a long-time belief and expectation that has no foundation except the weight we give it.”

Dr. Christiane Northrup has a great new book out about this very topic. It’s called, “Goddesses Never Age.”

I had one such goddess in last weekend’s workshop. Although Northrup suggests we not reveal our age (A better question, she says when people ask, is “What do you really want to know?), this particular goddess, who was there with her two daughters, told us she was 80. We nearly fell out of our seats. She was every bit as spry of mind and body as the rest of us.

During the workshop, we picked a slip out of a basket of something we would manifest in the next few days. Jane picked “a pink car.”

Yesterday, she sent me this email along with the picture at the top of this post:

“Not one. (pink car) But two! I’m a believer.”

And to conclude my argument that, age is only relevant when it comes to cheese and wine, here’s a beautiful video of nearly 90-year-old Dick Van Dyke who can still dance like he did with Mary Poppins.

Being fearless is jumping even if you are afraid

“Gratitude bestows reverence, allowing us to encounter everyday epiphanies, those transcendent moments of awe that change forever how we experience life and the world.”—John Milton

The Universe is even better than the post office at delivering blessings. In spite of my shortcomings, miracles just keep on showing up. My weekend at Omega couldn’t have been more perfect. Perfect weather. Perfect group (the 35 souls who took the Magic and Miracles workshop were all beautiful geniuses who helped make the workshop SO EASY) and I even got the perfect rental car at LaGuardia—a powder blue VW beetle.

As you regulars to the blog know, workshop and easy are not words I usually say in the same sentence. I’ve talked a lot about my discomfort and fears that, as I often say, get so active that I’ve considered buying them a training bra.

The other blessing in this regard is something the comedian Pete Holmes told my friend, Jessica Ortner, on her Adventures in Happiness podcast. He said it took four years before he was comfortable doing standup. Four fricking’ years! Which makes me feel okay that, even though “my year of speaking dangerously” ended in March, I can “deeply love and accept myself” even when I’m still scared.

AND most importantly, I can continue to jump even when I am afraid.

For those who are interested, here’s my TedX talk where I definitely jumped anyway.

Why your life should always be a verb

“
Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.”–
Martin H. Fischer

Hey sports fans! I’m heading to the Omega Institute this weekend and wanted to share a quick story before I go.

I mentioned in E-Cubed that E-Squared has gone from being a funny title on a little black book to being a verb. This is from a guy who says he “E-Squares” everything. It obviously works.

Take it away, David Knapp-Fisher!

“I’m an avid follower of your blog, and loved your books.; in fact, when referring to the F.P. my wife and I always talk about “E-squaring” this, and “E-squaring” that! Well, after reading your post about giving a TEDx Talk, I thought you’d be interested in my little experience…

“I live in Victoria, B.C. and I was accepted as a speaker at the TEDx Stanley Park event in Vancouver which was this past Saturday. Several months ago speakers began attending monthly rehearsals to hone our talks – and since I travelled a distance to be there I’d usually be in Vancouver a few hours early, so I’d hide in a Starbucks and write blog posts until rehearsal time.

“Last month was no different; and with the pressure of a looming deadline to perfect my speech, I wrote a post about how I’m dealing with the nervousness of it all… (sound familiar?) and here’s where E2 came in on a few occasions. I know you know what I mean!

“My first worry came the day before the event – I needed about $25 dollars in change for the myriad of busses and subways I’d need to take over the next 3 days, but was about $8 dollars short. I just “put it out there” and figured the universe would step in, and it would work out. Sure enough, on the Friday (which also happened to be the busiest travel day for me) I arrived in Vancouver to find out that – due to an earlier issue that inconvenienced transit riders – all buses and subways were FREE for the entire day! Woot! Woot! $15- saved already, and problem one out of the way! Thank you, F.P.!

“The next morning the day had arrived, and to be honest, I felt prepared, but still nervous… I mean after all, this is TEDx! I walked into a random shop to grab a coffee, and what was blaring over the speakers, other than “I Lived” by One Republic – the theme song I’d identified weeks earlier that was meant to help me sail through this experience; and hear it was, playing for me the morning of the event!

“And with that, a sense of calm came over me, and nervousness was squashed for the rest of the day.I aced the speech received a standing ovation, and have been riding a high ever since! Let’s chalk another success up for F.P.!

“Anyway, as much as I’ve always believed in the F.P. it’s pretty cool how during one of the most important days of my career, it showed up at all the right times to make sure everything went smoothly, and now I can look back on a seriously cool experience.

“We love, love, love “E-squarin” stuff all day long!

Dear Depression: Kiss my beautiful, Truth-proclaiming ass

“No one is your enemy except yourself.”–Shannon L. Adler

A person very close to me is struggling with depression. Since I once believed I, too, had depression (To borrow a Prince moniker, I now refer to myself as “Joy Previously Masquerading as Sorrow”), I wrote the following letter:

Dear________,

I’ve been thinking a lot about your current depression. Because I have also suffered the debilitating “dis-ease,” I feel that I can understand and perhaps help in some way.

Here’s what I now know: The only thing “wrong” when I’m depressed is my thoughts. My thoughts start their incessant yammering, telling me I’m bad, that something is wrong with me, that life is hopeless.

But what I now believe with complete certainty is that these thoughts are false.

When I listen to them, claim them as my identity, I give them power they don’t deserve. The better tact is to observe them with interest (Wow! Where’d you come from?), know they’re temporary and REFUSE to fight them.

God promises me an abundant life, a life of joy, purpose and peace.

The thoughts of worthlessness are imposters. They only get away with their bald-faced lies to the extent I let myself fight with them, to the degree I let myself believe they contain power.

Nowadays, I try to remember my two magic words: “It’s okay.”

And I hold on to the fact that there is NO WAY I can be worthless or bad or unloved. The ego’s ridiculous thoughts have no power except the power I give them. I can choose to simply observe them and recognize them as the powerless posers they really are.

The only, only Truth is that God loves me as His precious child. He adores me and wants only good for me and for all His children.

As for the ego and its thoughts of worthlessness? They can kiss my beautiful, adored-by-God ass.

And so it is.

“Let’s get out our leg warmers and dance our asses off.” –Vince Vaughn

“There is a path toward the light. The one that goes blink, blink, blink inside your chest when you know what you’re doing is right. Listen to it. Trust it. Let it make you stronger than you are.”–Cheryl Strayed

I just returned from a glorious 10 days in Peru. Visited Machu Picchu and Cuzco, stayed in a 350-year-old manor house where Simon Bolivar was living when he liberated South America, gave a workshop in Lima and had the best time with my daughter who is home from college for the summer.

Because there’s a Mount Everest of laundry and a to-do-list that nearly fills my beloved notebook, I decided to re-run a post from a couple years ago about the power of our words. And as some famous person (General MacArthur?) once said, “I shall eventually return.”

Enjoy!

I was interviewing a business owner a while back. We got off topic (imagine that) and she made a comment that made me consider reaching out and giving her an inappropriate bear hug. It was a simple comment, one I’ve heard (probably even said) many times before. She was upset about a particular issue that shall not be named and, in resignation, threw her hands in the air and said, “If it’s not one thing, it’s a thousand others.”

Her rant almost seemed like a foreign language to me. It wasn’t that I was offended, but it had been so long since I’ve thought that way or really even been around people who aren’t aware of the tremendous power of their words, that I sat there dumbfounded.

Now, I’m not this woman’s coach or counselor, but I wanted desperately to comfort her, to explain to her that every word that drops out of her mouth is sculpting her life experience.

I wanted to warn her, to help her understand that whatever she believes and yes, utters out loud, will be seconded by the the great universal energy.

I know. I’m probably like the annoying ex-smoker who no longer has patience for friends still practicing their former vice.

So instead of lecturing her, instead of suggesting that if she wasn’t more vigilant, negativity, like a body snatcher, could eventually take her over, I held my tongue and thanked the blink, blink, blink pounding in my chest for showing me a better way.

“Truth merely wants to give you happiness, for such its purpose is.”–A Course in Miracles

“Lay your interfering thoughts aside.”—Course in Miracles

My thoughts provide an endless source of entertainment. Most of the time, they’re busy replaying the past, or constructing a future.

Instead of living in “The Holy Now,” where miracles are natural and joy is unstoppable, I put up a barrier. I let the past direct the movie of my life.

By believing today is going to resemble yesterday (and we all do—that’s how we decide things) we leave no room for change, no room for all the good the universe is trying so hard to bestow. There is a HUGE stockpile of blessings just waiting for you to lay down your continuous reactivation of the past.

Over and over, instead of viewing the delicious juiciness and endless possibilities available in this now moment, we plan the future using yesterday’s replay. The present has gifts of its own, but we keep returning to yesterday. Hard to believe, but the present doesn’t need our help!!!

As the Course in Miracles so clearly states, “Without the continuity of old ideas and sick beliefs, present confidence will direct the way.”

Every time, I head out on a new trip (as I’m doing today, going to Peru with my daughter), I decide in advance that I’m going to have a great time. I picture amazing adventures, laughter, everything working out with ease and grace.

Well, guess what? That’s exactly what I get.

Pre-paving is powerful mojo. Just make sure you don’t pre-pave the past. Pre-pave something unexpected, something unlimited.

Once we let go of all our planning, all our struggling and all our beliefs that it’s our job to figure life out, the universe, whose only purpose is our good, will flood us with blessings.

Without defenses, fool bullheadedness and insistence in living everywhere but in the now, we can expect joy that constantly increases. And that’s dignity!

It’s alive! Whatever you put your attention upon becomes alive!

“Let’s live, baby. Let’s feel alive at all times. Make this moment your reckoning. Your head has been held under water for too long and now it is time to rise up and take your first true breath.”― Brian Krans

Kids’ computer games have undoubtedly evolved since my daughter Taz played them on the giant desktop (compared to today’s laptops, that early Gateway is a veritable behemoth) in my office.

But back then, she had several games where, by pointing a cursor at an item in a scene, it would came alive. For example, if she clicked on a cupboard door, it would open, music would play and a duet of dancing mice would pirouette across the shelf. Or she’d click on a flowerpot and it would shimmy and shake until its beautiful red petals rained to the ground.

Life is a little like those old computer games. When you put your attention on something, it literally comes alive. If you put your cursor on all the opportunities and love in the scenes of your life, that reality comes alive. But if you continue to click on the monsters under the bed, they, too, are more than happy to put in an appearance. The thing is we’re the ones manning the dials. We’re the ones deciding where to point our cursors, where to send our attention.

Here’s something that drew my attention last year. I loved it and like to re-run it every now and again, because it’s a good start to a weekend that better include dancing.

Why I live by Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” mantra

“Dare to love yourself
as if you were a rainbow
with gold at both ends.”
― Aberjhani

This is getting crazy.

I just heard about two college professors at two different colleges who assigned, E-Squared. For college credit. One is even going to send me her students’ papers which, as she said, were “pretty amazing.”

And someone sent me this picture of Andy Dick, the comedian, actor and Season 16 Dancing with the Stars competitor, who is apparently reading it, too.

With the new book, the one I’m writing now, I throw down an even bigger gauntlet. Full-time joy. Constant contact with the Divine Buzz.

Because the more joy you have in your life, the better life works. The more gratitude you feel, the wider the door opens for life’s largesse to flow in.

In fact, the ONLY thing that can keep it away is the walls we all build with our crazy thoughts. But once we quit believing our ridiculous, crazy-making thoughts, once we start trusting that joy is our natural, God-given state, all the security forces in the world can’t keep our good away.

Is it time to tune into a new radio station?

“At every point in time,
there are infinite possibilities
and a parallel reality exists for each possibility.”
–Daniel Jackson, Stargate

Imagine this? A foreign exchange student from a tiny African village with no running water or electricity comes to the West and gets dropped off at a hotel room. The hotel maid, who has a giant crush on George Strait and loves to listen to the local country and western station, forgot to turn off the radio when she finished tidying up the room. Hours later, the student walks into his first hotel room ever to find a radio playing non-stop country and western music and loud, obnoxious ads.

He much prefers the drumming of his little village, but unfortunately he has no idea that a) the radio has an off switch or b) that, at any time, he could simply move the dial to a different, more pleasing station.

Hopefully, the above scenario has never happened, but it’s a perfect metaphor for life. An extensive line-up of music stations with an immense variety of options is available for anyone with a car, a boom box or a computer with Pandora.

Life, too, offers a dizzying choice of consciousness options. We can choose joyful thoughts or thoughts of fear. We can choose to celebrate or worry. The station we tune into is completely up to us. It’s the most important decision we ever make. Our consciousness channels create the quality of our life.

Most of us are like the exchange student, stuck on one channel and unaware that, at any time, we could pick a different reality. We are the captains of our fate, the master of our mind’s channels that all too often get stuck on an endless loop.

Before long, we start believing that reality is nothing but the loud, obnoxious C&W station playing in our consciousness. We fail to realize that a) there’s an off-switch, b) there are lots of other channels and c) the world only appears the way it does because, in our ignorance, we chose the wrong channel. Isn’t it time to change the dial?

Why I’m the luckiest person on the planet, Episode 14

“Eventually you will see that the real cause of problems is not life, but the commotion the mind makes about life.”—Michael Singer http://angieaway.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/pura-vida-costa-rica-1.jpeg

I’m in Costa Rica, on a Pacific beach, hanging out with my daughter, writing my new book.

But that’s not why I’m the luckiest person on the planet. I’m immensely blessed because of all of you. You guys so rock! I’ve said it before, but I constantly feel like Sally Field when she gushed, “You like me, you really like me.”

So thank you for being so generous and kind and well, liking me and my running bra thoughts from the last post. It really blew me away. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I’m also constantly wowed by the cool stories you send that only add add further proof that the universe adores us all and is trying like bloody hell to point that out.

Here’s a story from Hillary from Toronto:

“I recently took my first vacation by myself to Paris. It was a last minute decision. I was at a work conference in Amsterdam. I was a little nervous that I’d be alone the entire time…especially during dinners!

“I do daily manifestations all the time because I love seeing them turn up in joyful ways. On the Sunday I arrived, I chose yellow bows to manifest. Sunday goes by and nothing, but I was exploring the Parisian streets so no big deal. Monday goes by…still no yellow bows…but I was having a great time none the less. I met some nice ladies at dinner.

“Tuesday I did a food tour, and it was awesome! My tour guide invited me for drinks after and helped me get to my next destination, the Catacombs! I still wanted my yellow bows though 😉

“She took me to the subway and explained how to get there. While I was on the subway, this guy in colorful attire noticed I looked confused as I stared at the mass intertwining of subway lines for the Paris underground. He asked where I was going and if I needed help.

Turned out he and his bandmates were going to the Catacombs as well, they were from L.A. (on a side note ever since I started pursuing being a musician, I am a musical magnet lol). I had such a great time with these guys, especially the colorful one that first approached me.

His name was Sal. We had a special connection immediately and spent the rest of the day and night together and decided to remain friends. Can you guess what color his shoe laces were?”

Big, bright yellow bows.

I’m offering a new experiment in the Hay House World Summit that begins May 9. If you register now, you’re entitled to five free videos. Hope to “see you” there.
