Why it’s perfectly okay to have a negative thought

“What if right in that moment, it was quite beautiful the way it was?”—Grace Bell

Every thought is temporary until you decide to invite it in for martinis and offer to make up the guest bedroom.

Left unopposed, a thought, like a lightning bug, will blink right off, flit away, never to be seen again.

What happens instead is we notice a negative thought, we start swatting at it, we wonder why we have it, we come up with seven steps to get rid of it and we begin beating ourselves up because…well all the books say we shouldn’t have a negative thought.

Before long, we’ve joined a support group and built a shrine.

Instead of fighting a negative thought, I prefer to use my two magic words—It’s okay—and let it flitter away and disappear.

The same strategy applies for those things we dislike in our lives—say the latest credit card statement or the doctor’s report. “But it’s true!!!” you insist.

Once we realize that any thought, any condition is temporary, with no power, no charge except that which we give it, we can go back to our natural state which is joy and amazing awesomeness.

Why I’m the luckiest person on the Planet, Episode 13

“Do not try to limit what you see by your narrow little beliefs.”—A Course in Miracles

Some people collect sports cars. Others collect rare and expensive wine. I collect quotes. They’re much easier to carry around.

Today, for example, I added the above quote to my collection as well as these two gems from A Course in Miracles:

“I will receive whatever I request.”

and

“It is as true now as it ever will be.”

So the reason I’m feeling so lucky is because other people are starting to quote little ole me. They’re even making cute little internet images. Nick Ortner, the tapping guru who just announced he’s about to have a new little tapping maestro (congratulations, Nick and Brenna!!) got thousands of likes for the “Something amazingly awesome….” quote.

I’ve talked about my A.A. 2.0. program many times, but for those who are new to the party, here’s the blog post that spawned that now-viral quote.

“What’s the point of being realistic?”–Will Smith

My name is Pam G. and, as of today, I am launching a brand new chapter of A.A. Unlike Version 1.0, my A.A. stands for Amazing Awesomeness and it only has two steps.

Step #1: Admit that… “something amazingly awesome is going to happen to me today.” First thing every morning, before throwing off your covers, before leaping out of bed (and it doesn’t take long in this program before participants do leap out of bed with joy and expectation), before firing up the old Mr. Coffee, proclaim to the world that something unexpected, exciting and amazingly awesome is going to happen to you today. It takes what, three, four seconds? Yet it’s one of the most important things you will ever do. The first few minutes of every morning pre-paves the next 24 hours with positive expectations. It sets up a powerful intention, a forecast on which you can focus.

And it never fails to come true.

Step #2: Come to believe… in blessings and miracles. Pretend you’re a private investigator assigned the task of finding all the beauty and largesse in the world. The dominant paradigm might suggest otherwise, but practiced with regularity, this ritual will force you to see things in a whole different way. Instead of looking for problems, be on the hunt for new blessings. Take on the mission each day of reporting back with at least three pieces of amazing awesomeness, three blessings that are different than the day before. I often liken myself to Lewis or Clark, scouting important new territory.

Because we get out of life whatever we focus on, practicing these two simple steps has the power to override and overturn the accepted paradigm.

Like Bill W.’s A.A, that has reformed the lives of millions, this new program (A.A. 2.0) can transform a “nameless squad of empty glass thinkers.”

I invite others to join me in tweeting their blessings (only rule is it has to be different each day) to my Twitter feed. Or feel free to leave your blessings here. By expecting and looking for a different, more kinder reality, we can, together in one jubilantly mighty whoop, uplift and lighten this tired old world.

“How beautiful it is to do nothing and then rest afterwards.”—Quote on a postcard at Sparkling Hill Resort, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia

I recently returned from a whirlwind of travel and, while I wouldn’t say I’m doing nothing, I am taking it easy, playing lots of pickleball and percolating a new book. Actually two new books.

I’m also getting ready to launch a really cool contest where every single person wins. Stay tuned for all the exciting details including such prize as a 7-day cruise with yours truly and a pair of tickets to all four North American I Can Do It’s!

The prize pack I offered in E-Cubed went quickly. You can read about it here. But this new one is a doozie so I hope you’ll get as excited as I am. Details forthcoming.

When I returned from my workshop (I liked to call them playshops) at Sparkling Hill, I got an email from a reader who seemed a bit indignant, “Why didn’t you tell me? I’d have come to your seminar. I live really close.”

While I do have an events page on this very website, I probably didn’t do a very hot job of marketing. I’m so new at speaking that it still takes me aback sometimes when people tell me they WANT to hang out.

For those who do, for those who think it’d be rather enjoyable to be part of one of my power posses, here is what’s scheduled so far for 2015:

February 20-22: Weekend Workshop in Bern, Switzerland. Here’s the link, although, unless you speak German (or is it French?), you’ll probably need a translator. Rest assured, I won’t be speaking in anything but English.

April 24-26: I Can Do It! Denver I’m super psyched for this one because it’s my first North American I Can Do It! As I mentioned, I was so high after the London ICDI! that I worried the drug dogs would think I was taking something.

June 5 and 6: Manifesting Magic and Miracles. Omega Institute. The totally cool Omega Institute has been on my bucket list for years. I’m so jazzed that I get to actually present there. My original intention was to volunteer to serve food or clean cabins or something.

June 21 to 28: Silver Lining Cruise with lots of cool speakers from San Francisco to Alaska.

September 24: Orlando I Can Do It! Again, it’s going to be one-of-a-kind.

How to start a chain of blessings with one easy step

“When you believe something, you have made it true for you.”—A Course in Miracles

If you’ve read my books or talked to me for more than say, 15 minutes, you already know I’m a HUGE fangirl of A Course in Miracles. It probably sounds more dignified to say “I’m a student of the Course,” but who wants to be dignified. Certainly not this dancing fool.

Besides the quote at the top of this post, I also read this passage (I’m paraphrasing) from the Course this morning: “Your safety, peace and joy are totally beyond question except by you. In fact, any perceived problems are not problems of fact. They are problems of understanding.”

So one of my goals is to change our understanding of the world. I’ve also called it changing the dominant paradigm. So here’s a little story I heard when I was in the Okanagan Valley the weekend before last:

Winfield, British Columbia is part of a little town with no more than 12,000 people. It’s wedged between a couple ski resorts and a beautiful lake. To give you some idea of its stellar beauty, let’s just leave it with this: the entire Okanagan Valley is popular with Canadian hockey players in the off-season.

One day, at the Winfield Tim Horton’s (Tim Horton was a well-known hockey player whose name now graces some 4600 coffee shops across Canada), a guy in the Sparkling Hill workshop I gave with Olympic coach Dirk Stroda told us he drove up to the window only to be informed that his coffee had been taken care of by the person in front of him. Inspired, he decided to “pay it forward” to the next car in line. Later, he was talking to his neighbor who works at that Tim Horton’s and was told the giving to the car behind went on for a full four and a half hours. FOUR AND A HALF HOURS of unbridled generosity. And you thought the world was a scary place?

What might you do today to start a chain of blessings?

I got news for you, Star Wars—The Force is Already Awake

“Love is more powerful than death, bigger than the dark, bigger than cancer, bigger even than airport security lines.”—Anne Lamott

On November 6, it was officially announced that the seventh Star Wars movie would be called “The Force Awakens.”

I yawned and said, “Well, duh!”

The Force (Or what I call the Field of Infinite Potentiality) is alive and kicking and always has been. Like someone tweeted this morning, “Once you buy into what @PamGrout is talking about, #Weird Shit starts to happen.”

The only reason we think it’s new or “weird shit” or just now awakening is because we’ve bought into the other story. The story that says, “This is all we get.” We’ve been pretending that we’re all alone and that we have no power and that there’s not a Force that is chomping at the bit to get involved in our lives, to connect with us, to provide us with guidance.

I get emails every day that start with something like, “You’re never going to believe this.”

Here’s one that came in yesterday. “I lost one of a pair of favorite earrings bought in Santa Monica, CA (I live in London so couldn’t just pop into the shop and buy another): gold hoops with black diamonds. I put out an intention to get the earring back and this morning on my dressing table were the two earrings! Isn’t that crazy and inexplicable!

It’s not crazy and inexplicable once you let go of the old story. The old story convinces us that there is “one reality.” That “this one reality” is solid, never changing. But it only sticks around as long as you continue to invest in it.

In the quantum playground, all things are possible. So instead of investing in “what is,” it’s time to put all our energy into “what might be possible.”

As 22-year-old John Boyega, one of the new stormtroopers in Stars Wars VII, said to critics who questioned the casting, “To whom is may concern….Get used to it.”’

How Wonder Woman can help you fly through the holidays with ease and joy

“I had to stop watching the news. It was making my own problems seem insignificant.” –Cartoon I just saw in the New Yorker

It’s a long story, but many years ago I met Lynda Carter at Chris Evert’s wedding. So when Warner Bros. announced yesterday that Michelle MacLaren will be directing the new Wonder Woman movie, the first big budget superhero movie about a woman, I thought about Lynda (who will probably not be cast in the movie) and decided I would practice her superpowers this week. Here’s why:

Scientists have proven that when you stand like Wonder Woman (fists on waist and legs spread in what Harvard Business School professor Amy Cuddy calls a power pose) you lower your cortisol levels and boost your testosterone.

“So what?” you might be thinking. WHAT is that when your cortisol levels go down, you drastically lower your stress and when testosterone goes up, you feel more confident.

Cuddy discovered that standing in this pose for a mere two minutes helps folks ace job interviews, tests and other potentially stress-provoking events.

Which is why I plan to strike this pose throughout the holidays, whenever I’m tempted to get testy with relatives or to feel time pressure about the 14 dishes I’m attempting to maneuver into the oven at the same time.

I plan to slip into the bathroom (Superman used a phone booth, but, thanks to cell phones, they’re practically obsolete), strike my Wonder Woman pose and come out, if not in cape, a whole lot calmer and happier.

I’d like to thank Dirk Stroda for introducing me to Amy Cuddy’s fabulous TED talk. I just met Dirk and his beautiful wife Verena in the Okanagan Valley of Canada. Dirk, who is a coach to executives and Olympic athletes, also taught me how to procure free drugs—well, oxytocin which is the love drug and the only one I’m interested in stockpiling. It can be manufactured IN THE BODY without Walter White’s goggles and messy law enforcement problem.

The point is…our physiology (like I point out in the Boggie Woogie Experiment in E-Cubed) can help us get our mind back on the joy frequency.

Dirk and I gave a workshop together at Sparkling Hill Resort, an unbelievably cool health resort with eight different saunas and steam rooms (one of them even had the same ceiling as the Sistine Chapel) and more than 3 million Swarovski crystals. Do I have a cool job or what?

The last little tip I’d like to share for sailing through the holidays is to sing. Jay Pryor, another cool friend of mine, from one of my power posses, and his wife Jessica have started singing to their two young kids. Instead of demanding that they come to dinner or stop drawing on the Lazy-Boy, they simply break into an operatic aria that more effectively gets the point across.

And lastly, because I was tempted to join a protest after last night’s Grand Jury decision in Ferguson, I’d like to present yet another headline in the world I’m envisioning:

Police officers all over the world give up their guns and realize the best way to do their job is to shoot love, not fear

Tune in to the frequency of gratitude each morning so the mothership can find you

“What good are all the courses, initiations and headstands if, in the end, the ego does the leading.”—Tosha Silver
amazingly awesome

You wouldn’t go on a date without brushing your teeth.

Or write a resume without adding your phone number.

So why do we persist in starting our days without tuning into the Divine Buzz?

This Divine Buzz, F.P. (take your pick) is a loving force, folks, that wants nothing but to connect with us, to guide us, to bestow upon us every blessing we could possibly think up and a bunch we haven’t even come up with yet.

But instead of tuning in to this ocean of awesomeness, we’re tuned into this other frequency that limits the transmission. Anne Lamott recently wrote about a book signing in Wichita, Kansas where she was, as she describes it, “in whiny baby mode.”

On that transmission, the mothership couldn’t locate her. Couldn’t help her transcend her bad mood.

But by tuning into the frequency of gratitude, the “oh yea! I’m an author and I get to travel around and meet my readers. How cool is that?,” the “mothership” came to the rescue.

The mothership is always circling, always waiting with answers to every single need. Our only mission, and why wouldn’t we choose to accept it, is to stay on that frequency of gratitude where it can get through.

Quit shoulding on yourself

“As long as your experience of self and life is defined by the mechanical, conditioned, and compulsive movement of thought, you are bound to a very, very limited perception of what is real.”–Adyashanti

It starts the moment we’re born. Doctors (or probably nurses these days) measure and weigh us, giving us the message that there’s a proper height and weight we need to be.

Then we learn that language (and all the rules conveyed by language) is more important than those imaginary friends that tell us exactly what we need to know.

Spirit, the universe, the F.P., God (lots of synonyms for this thing I often call the Divine Buzz) has never deserted us, but we’re so busy with our dark clouds of guilt and shame, the “should storm” that begins the moment all the frightened adults start administering “tests,” that we fail to notice, we fail to appreciate its unending gifts.

Even the self-help literature (and, yes, I’m one of its dispensers) sometimes makes us feel guilty. Oh no! I’m having a negative thought. Oh, no! I’m not vibrating enough joy.

You know what? It doesn’t matter. If you simply let go of all the “shoulds” that have infiltrated the Truth of who you are, you will be guided, blessed and constantly taken care of.

As my lesson in A Course in Miracles says today: The only sacrifice asked by this Infinite Intelligence is to give up all suffering, all sense of loss and sadness, all anxiety and doubt.

The good news is that minus the “should storm,” LOVE comes streaming in, healing all pain and granting the awareness of eternal joy.

Also want to share this beautiful blog that a friend sent me. It’s more of the new and improved headlines we all wrote yesterday.

And lastly, Hay House would like me to remind you that both E-Squared and E-Cubed are going for a measly $1.99 on the Amazon Kindle store.

Why “what’s possible” is far more important than “what is”

“Without leaps of imagination or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all is a form of planning.” ― Gloria Steinem

We have a choice. We can place our attention on “what is” or we can dream of what can be. By placing our attention on new possibilities, we animate a completely different future.

Here are the headlines I’m envisioning for today:

New Ebola cases in Africa fall to zero

U.S. Democrats and Republicans hug it out on the Senate floor

The Middle East celebrate 10 years of peaceful coexistence

Snows return to Kilimanjaro

Pam Grout appears on Super Soul Sunday

Tell me in the comments section below: What’s your new headline?

Why you should give everything you have for as long as you physically can. Shane Burcaw @shaner528

‘Promise me that you’ll always remember that you’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think.’–Christopher Robin to Winnie the Pooh

My naysayers (and they are legion) rarely attack my writing (well, a few accuse me of trying to be a standup comedian). The thing they seem to take issue with is my belief that life is meant to be a glorious adventure, that happiness is a choice.

They say things like, “But what about war? What about kids born with disabilities?”

And I refuse to be swayed. Our head space is 100 percent up to us. I read a book over the weekend that, if we were in a courtroom, I would present as Exhibit A.

It’s called Laughing at My Nightmare. It’s by Shane Burcaw, a 21-year-old wiseass blogger who happens to have spinal muscular atrophy. He has been in a wheelchair since he was three. His parents or his younger brother have to pick him up and put him into bed at night. When he has to pee, they have to put his penis (did I just say the word penis in a blog post?) in what he calls “a pee jar.”

If anyone has a right to dispute my beliefs, it would be Shane. Yet, this amazing young man has more fun and a better attitude than many of us with fully functioning bodies. His mission, in fact, is to rid the world of negativity. He believes we get through adversity by laughing, by having fun.

He has a girlfriend (who he actually proposed to in the book), he graduated from Moravian College, he started a nonprofit to help others with muscular dystrophy (move over, Jerry Lewis) and Rainn Wilson (Dwight Schrute on The office) did a movie about his life. As Wilson says on the cover, “I would help change his underpants anytime.”

But most of all, Shane spends his time coming up with big adventures and crazy schemes. And proving to people that it is only our misguided thoughts that could ever make us unhappy.

P.S. Hay House asked me to mention that, if you’ve been waiting to buy E-Cubed, now is the time. It and its sister, E-Squared, are going for a measly $1.99 on the Amazon, Kindle store.
