Quit hexing yourself by looking for disease

“It’s supposed to be a professional secret, but I’ll tell you anyway. We doctors do nothing. We only help and encourage the doctor within.”–Albert Schweitzer

We are constantly being slapped around with the crazy idea that our bodies are plotting against us.

Just watch an hour of television. The drugs ads warn us into great vigilance:

Better watch out for this symptom.
Make sure you’re aware of that problem.
It’s only a matter of time until your body is going to reach out and strangle you.

Here’s the ad I’d like to run:

Your body is a self-healing masterpiece. It is brilliantly equipped with natural self-repair mechanisms that fight infections, repair broken proteins, kill cancer cells and keep you in tip-top shape. The only thing that ever stops it from doing its job is your ridiculous belief that it is not your closest ally.

As Derren Brown, the popular British mentalist who just opened a one-man show at the Linda Gross Theater in Chelsea, “we are all trapped inside our own minds.”

In 2012 on a show called Fear and Faith, he cured dozens of people of everything from phobias to addictions with a powerful drug he called Rumyodin.

In reality, Rumyodin (an anagram for “your mind”) was a sugar pill but it worked because his “patients” believed it worked.

I was reminded of another powerful placebo story (you may recall the Placebo Experiment from E-Cubed) while watching Dr. Lissa Rankin’s video on the Hay House Summit. (If you haven’t already signed up for this free event, you have exactly one more week.) You can sign up at this link:

She told the story of a doctor who was assigned a patient who was literally days away from dying. The patient had tumors the size of oranges. But he’d heard about a new experimental drug and he begged his new doc to try it. Miraculously, the “wonder drug” he’d read about eliminated his tumor.

Several weeks later, however, reports hit the airwaves that this new drug was not as powerful as originally thought. The tumors returned. His doctor, by now savvy, gave his patient a placebo, telling him it was a stronger form of the drug and that the ineffective trials had been using too little of this powerful drug. Once again, the tumors from his stage 4 lymphoma began to disappear.

Finally, the FDA pronounced the drug ineffective and pulled it off the market. The patient, who had been rapidly recovering, died within a week.

I could go on and on about how 79 percent of medical students develop the symptoms they’re studying. Or about the woman with a split personality who has diabetes in one of her personalities and normal sugar levels in the other.

But I’m not a doctor and would never dream of prescribing anything.

But I do know this:

We should teach our children that their bodies have self-healing superpowers.

And we should quit hexing ourselves by looking for disease.

‘And we should remember that if chimpanzees can lower their blood pressure at will, something Harvard doc, Herbert Benson, discovered in his research, there’s probably not much we CAN’T do to heal ourselves.

  1. Thank you thank you thank you! I can’t say it enough Pam Grout! Sometimes it’s like I’m the only one thinking this way and spewing this message and then I read your words, so I am so very very grateful to you for putting it out there! I appreciate and love you!!

  2. You just got bill-smooched! Doesn’t matter why. I wanted to read this post this morning.

  3. I’ve been reading Dr. Joe Dispensa’s book “The Placebo Effect” While I know intellectually that this is true, somehow I can’t seem to believe I deserve to be well. My daughter has her own copy of your books that we have both read and you can’t imagine the number of times she hammers me with your words. 🙂 Too bad I didn’t find these when my mind was a bit more flexible. I will tell you that the Universe is providing. More to come on this.

  4. Well said Pam…………I’m still working on overcoming ME/CFS/FM after 29 years. I refuse to belong to websites that promote products and I mute ad’s on T.V. about pharmaceuticals and I don’t belong to any “support groups” – all they do is intensify the problem – which I WILL overcome. Your books have helped tremendously, yet I feel I must be missing something? Why can’t I heal myself?……any suggestions from friends out there would be greatly appreciated…..love to all……

    1. Probably for the same reason I haven’t yet won the lottery: on some level we don’t really believe we can. (And don’t say you “can’t” heal yourself–that’s what Pam calls “heading back toward Biloxi.” It just hasn’t happened YET.)
I have dozens of books, tapes, & CDs on the LOA, & they all boil down to one thing: You have to believe it can & will happen, and you have to FEEEL it as if it’s already happened.
Immerse yourself in that concept. Re-read Pam’s books until you have them memorized.
Also try “The Magic of Believing” by Claude Bristol; anything by Wayne Dyer, especially Meditations for Manifesting (only on tape/CD–it never came out in book form); “Excuse Me, Your Life Is Waiting” by Lynn Grabhorn; “The Neville Reader” by Neville Goddard, and, specifically for health issues, “You Can’t Afford the Luxury of a Negative Thought.” That last is worth it for the title alone.
      Good luck!

      1. Thank you! By the way I didn’t say “I can’t heal myself”…..I said “WHY can’t I heal myself?”….apparently I have to think more positive and really “feel” being well. My I ask what experiences in the health realm have you overcome?

      2. (Can’t figure out how to reply to your second comment, so I’m replying to my own–oh, well, it should end up in the same thread, at least . . .)
Nothing major–I’ve been lucky. But things like sciatica 20 years ago, by reading Dr. John Sarno’s “Healing Back Pain” and, especially, his next one, “The Mind-Body Prescription”–this latter especially might be helpful, as it mentions your issues; arthritis about 10 years ago; gum issues, eczema, back pain, various muscle & joint things . . . As I said, nothing major.
You’re doing all the right things, though: ignoring the medical scare community, keeping positive, knowing you’ll succeed eventually. So I know you’ll triumph!
By the way, none of this is to say that various conditions, illnesses, etc. are imaginary. They are real! Just induced by the mind.
Hang in there and keep believing!

      3. Thank you Pat for your compassion. I love John Sarno’s books. I know he is retired now – 90 years? I need to go back to his books – I have The Mind Body Prescription which I have read many times & The Divided Mind. And begin again with Pam’s great books. Along with friends such as you and Pam I WILL return to great health. Bright Blessings of love.

    2. I highly recommend watching Forks Over Knives, reading The Starch Solution by Dr. McDougall (and his website-there are tons of success stories) and reading Proteinaholic by Dr. Garth Davis.
Positive thinking definitely helps, but won’t eliminate unconscious thinking patterns on it’s own. Code To Joy by George Pratt and Peter Lambrou explains a method of releasing past experiences that may be holding us back.
Do you meditate? That may lend you insight.
I recently read Anger by Thich Nhat Hanh. He says to treat feelings of anger “like a baby” – immediately put down what you are doing, pick it up, hold it, listen to it, attend to it’s needs by breathing mindfully or walking mindfully for 15 minutes. Perhaps treating your symptoms in this way could lead you to an answer or even relief of some sort. Don’t push them away or resist their cries. Accept them with your whole being so they can flow through you..
I love the version of the Buddhist Lovingkindness Meditation in Marci Shimoff’s book:
      “May you be well
      May you be safe
      May you be happy
      May you live with ease.”
Send these thoughts to yourself and others.
      Best wishes!

  5. …while in the Recovery Room from minor surgery, the nurse commented that my blood pressure was high….I said ‘watch this’, & did breathing I learned from Tai Chi….we watched the monitor return to normal….she was blown away…(so was I to actually see it on a gauge)…love it!!

  6. I was thinking of this just today. I had a bone spur – well, still do – but the pain and discomfort of it healed when I decided I didn’t want to be bothered with it. Now I’m experiencing carpel tunnel syndrome pain in my arm and today decided I’m tired of it and it’s not going to bother me anymore.

    1. “…it healed when I decided that I didn’t want to be bothered with it.” Love that! Simple, powerful, effective. This reminds me of Pam’s explanation In E 2 about being broke: “We only experience it because we devote our thoughts to it. That’s how powerful our minds are.”

  7. I absolutely love this, Pam! Lissa Rankin’s to duck is absolutely inspiring. I think I’ve watched it three or 4 or 5 or maybe more times.

Part of what I’m actually trying to do right now is gather people who have some of the toughest “diseases” around and teach them everything that I know customized to what they’re suffering so that they can get results and heal themselves. Things like fibromyalgia, neuropathy, cancer, depression, arthritis, chronic pain, etc.

Right now I’m getting the guts to just take this on and see what I can do to help people adjust their mindsets and develop skill sets that improve their lives in measurably…

… And a post like this, not unlike the other things that you write every time, helps to boost my confidence in taking such a bold step.

So thank you! And if you know of anybody suffering from those things who’s willing to take it on, send them along.

    Bob

    1. O.k. Would you like to take me on? Pam will give you my email address. I asked – and I shall receive! Luv, ya!

  8. Buenas tardes, quiero saber si pueden enviar los emails en español?, gracias y bendiciones.

  9. Oh thank you so very much…! Now I am 100 percent sure to stop the chemo and trust my own very dear amazing body to heal it self.. THANK YOU!!

  10. Pam,
After reading your books, i have been teaching my almost five years old daughter to hug and kiss herself and any booboos she gets. I tell her she has special power over her own body.

P.S. I still take her to see her pediatrician 🙂

    Love,
    Massiel

  11. Thank you for the heat reminder! I shared with each of my 4 children. Always better coming from someone else:)
