Know the Now

“The highest to which man can attain is wonder.”—Goethe

Happy gratitude week, my brilliant, big-hearted friends!

This annual celebration calls for nothing less than a passage from my old standby, Thank & Grow Rich.

But first, I want to tell you about the South American songbird I just discovered.

The black manakin, that hails from dry scrublands near the rainforest, not only has a weird call—sorta like a squeaky-sounding chuckle, but the male manakin performs backward somersaults so fast that human eyeballs can’t see them.

It’s only when video of the avian gymnasts is slowed way down that our limited range of vision can appreciate the show. We literally can’t see their flips under normal conditions.

The black manakin provides a worthy reminder that there is a WHOLE heck of a lot of reality going on that escapes my notice. Like angels who might be hovering around beside me. Or miracles surreptitiously being orchestrated while I sit here in my office, delighting in stories about rainforest songbirds.

The point is there is SO MUCH happening behind the scenes that it is but a disservice to myself to believe I know how something should go down. Thinking I somehow understand reality only limits what’s possible.

Every moment is utterly new and unique and if I try to assign it with some kind of meaning or label it with something old school like say, words, I basically recreate the past.

I prefer what renowned physicist Arthur Eddington concluded. “Something unknown is doing we don’t know what.”

That’s why I consider wonder and gratitude the best use of my time.

So, as promised, here’s a short passage from my 2016 bestseller, Thank & Grow Rich: A 30-Day Experiment in Shameless Gratitude and Unabashed Joy:

Ode to Joy

If your mind isn’t cluttered by unnecessary things, this could be the best day of your life.”–Ethan Hughes (AKA, The Zing)

Gratitude?

Really?

Isn’t that sort of, well, lame?

You just wrote a pair of powerhouse books about energy and infinite possibility. And now you’re just gonna sell out and write about something pantywaist like gratitude? That’s so basic, so flimsy, so 101 . . .

Hold on, Sparky.

The gratitude I’m talking about in this book is anything but flimsy or 101. Let’s call it ferocious gratitude. In-your-face gratitude. None of the namby-pamby, sunshine-and-lollipops crap.

Because here’s the thing. When we don’t stop daily to inventory all the gazillion things going right in our lives, the crazy voices in our heads try to make us their bitch.

When we don’t militantly count our blessings, the voices start jabbering, telling us that life sucks, that we suck. They’re like the ticker crawl at the bottom of a news broadcast, running continuously in a nonstop loop.

As long as we keep tuning in to these voices, we fail to notice the incredible gift we’ve been given: to be here on planet Earth, to have this day, to enjoy this cosmic adventure. As long as we continue to etch their bald-faced lies deeper and deeper into our psyches, we cloud over our profound transformative connection to the field of infinite potentiality.

By simply stopping every day and registering our connection to this bigger thing, this undeniable, unchanging Presence, we start to notice a deeper truth, a happier reality. We start to notice an eternal broadcast airing its joyful melody quietly beneath the static.

No offense to Napoleon Hill, the author of the self-help classic on which my book title riffs, but the real power is in not thinking. If you want to override your brain’s unfortunate habit of leafing through your past and creating a hologram to match, forget thinking. And start thanking. And I mean thanking everything. The bills that are stacking up. The doctor’s report you weren’t expecting. The buffoon of a boyfriend who drank an entire bottle of tequila last night and puked on your new Oriental carpet.

When we practice this brand of ferocious gratitude— what I have dubbed the extreme sport of gratitude—we come to realize that all the striving, the endless struggle, the perpetual scrambling for our place in line, is unnecessary. In truth, it’s counterproductive and actually blocks the energy field that is and always has been available to sustain and guide us.

Brazen gratitude provides a portal, an entry point straight into the heart of the very field of infinite possibilities my other two Hay House books introduced. It puts you on an energetic frequency, a vibration that calls in miracles.

That’s it folks. Happiest of Thanksgivings–the best of your life!!!

The freaky math of gratitude

“I will give thanks to you forever and with my whole heart.”—Book of Psalms

Between the above quote and the story I’m about to tell, you can probably surmise that I went to church yesterday. A dear friend joined the Unity church here in town so, of course, I went to cheer her on. That’s what possibility posses do—celebrate each other for any and all spiritual leaps. Go team!

The speaker at the church service reminded us of the Bible story of the fish and loaves. It happens to be a favorite of mine because its math equation doesn’t add up to what we consider “normal, scientific reality.”

5+2=5000 is not an equation that computes for most of us. It doesn’t match what we were taught in school. Every reasonable, educated adult knows that five loaves and two fish do not feed 5000 people. But that’s only because, alongside math, we were taught the erroneous subject of scarcity and limitation.

When you use the equation of gratitude, when you add blessings to “math problems,” the resulting sums are skewed in your favor. Gratitude compounds and expands everything – even material things.

Jesus and his 12 disciples took 7 measly items (5 loaves and 2 fish) and, by blessing them, by giving gratitude for them, grew their larder into a feast for 5000.

So today someone emailed me they’d “lost $280 in cash and did I have any practices that can find the lost money or an equivalent?”

Here’s my answer, dear correspondent: Give thanks for whatever you have left, whatever you happen to have now. Even if it’s only one dime. If there’s no dime, give thanks that the sun came up this morning. And that your heart is still pumping blood throughout your body. Give thanks that you get to experience this precious life, even when it doesn’t feel so precious!

Every word or thought or even breath of gratitude multiplies whatever you have. It renders old school math problems irrelevant. It adds up to truth and the unfathomable math of miracles.

I know I repeat this over and over and over. (I figure I can get away with it because it happens to be Thanksgiving week here in the United States.)  Counting blessings turns even the tiniest of things into monster-size blessings, abundance and, yes, miracles that defy all laws of mathematics. Happiest of holidays, my friends!

“God is not the pushover some people would like you to believe.” — Alex Frankovitch

“Joy is the most infallible sign of the presence of God.”–sticky note on Stephen Colbert’s computerpuning4

If you read E-Squared, you might remember the chapter with the myths about God—that he’s a he, for example, and that he plays favorites and that he likes to makes black check marks after your name.

As the experiments in E-Squared proved, those myths are big fat whoppers. And to fear this force field, this presence that has traditionally been labeled God keeps us from living the life most extraordinary.

One of the biggies I used to believe is that if I surrendered to God, to the universe, I’d be required to work with starving babies in countries with Ebola and typhoid and other unmentionable diseases. I attribute this to the stream of foreign missionaries that came through my home when I was a kid.

What I’ve now come to realize is that the only thing God asks of me is to expand His goodness, to love as much as I possibly can and to create ridiculously beautiful things.

There’s a reason we humans have longings to write and dance and sing—-because that’s what God designed us to do. All of us are bestowed with talents that we’re meant to use to uplift each other. Yes, we are meant to be happy!

Yesterday on Thanksgiving (isn’t it so cool there’s an official holiday to do the thing I practice every day?), I was reflecting back on my year. It struck me that by simply showing up and using the gifts I was given, I received the following extraordinarily epic experiences from the universe:

1. I was invited to Verona, Italy where I danced to a 12-piece orchestra at a 16th century estate that once hosted Winston Churchill and Lady Di and stood on Juliet’s famous balcony. For good measure, I even shouted, “Wherefore art thou, Romeo.”

2. I was slathered by volcanic ash and sand at the Puning Hot Springs and Spa near Mount Pinatubo, Philippines. Yes, that’s me on the left in the above photo.

3. I walked 40 miles of the Cotswold Trail in England. It’s where the PBS show “Father Brown” is filmed.

4. And I got to help break the Guinness World record for most zombies ( I used beet juice for blood) dancing to Michael Jackson’s Thriller.
.

The list of cool things the universe (God/FP) blessed me with this year goes on and on.

Normally here on the blog, I share cool stories from readers about their gifts, but since my own unending blessings are fresh in my Thanksgiving-infused mind, I decided to use a couple as proof that God only wants our good, only wants to bless us and only wants us to use what we love to expand Its glory.

Those old beliefs that God has something distasteful for us up his sleeve is fake news. God’s will is only love and peace and really fun experiences for all. Drink it up, my friends!

In honor of weekend “movies,” thought I’d post this awesome Ted Talk I happened to catch earlier today.

Have the best weekend of your life, my fine-feathered friends.

What the BANANAS, Part II

“When we women offer our experience as our truth, as human truth, all the maps change.”–Ursula K. Le Guin

funny-bananas-collection_23-2147496652

As I mentioned in my new book, Thank and Grow Rich, I have inadvertently become a PR person for the universe.

The perks, as you can imagine, are many, but the best thing about this job is that my “employer”—if you want to call this universal love energy my “boss”—doesn’t ask that I pimp some useless product or lower my standards or pretend to believe in something I don’t see proof of every single day.

The universe is not trying to sell anything. All it wants to do is give. And give. And give some more.

My job as one of its many “press agents” is to let you know that you are loved unconditionally—always, without exception, no matter what.

I’m in charge, if you will, of publicizing the fact that the universe is trying like bloody hell to interact with you. The universe (or God or the field of infinite potentiality or whatever name you want to call this energy force) wants nothing more than to bless you, to guide you, to help you create the most exciting version of yourself possible.

And here’s the cool part. Not one thing is required of you for this to happen. You don’t have to earn its favor. Or send in a coupon. You just have to release the “reality” you’ve been reading about in the news. You just have to make space in your consciousness for the universe to get in. You have to quit fighting life and let it be.

Not only is the old reality as passé as the bump (it’s a dance, for those of you who missed the disco days), it’s defective and causing you to miss the most freakin’ amazing things.

So that’s why I continue to share these stories.

Here’s a fun one that appeals to a traveling fool like moi. Enjoy!:

“I read E2 last Xmas and decided I would manifest a trip each month for 2016 because I wanted to travel more. Plus I had kids and was a single mom, so the scheduling had to work out! except I had already booked a ticket to Toronto’S “I Can Do It” conference in May.

“Here is my list of travel. 2016 was totally successful! BTW I live way way up in Noerther Ontario, 9 hours north of Toronto. There is a small airport in Timmins that does fly to Toronto.

“January: My friend asked me if I wanted to go for a weekend to Hamilton, ON and she would pay to fly down and all expenses. She had a doctor appointment. We had a blast!

“February: I refinanced my mortgage and the bank said they put an extra 5k in my account in case I wanted to do anything. So….. half went to a spur of the moment trip to Jamaica with my friends and my mom, for the first time ever, was able to drive 9 hours to my house to babysit. PLUS our flight to Timmins from Toronto was delayed until the next day so I ended up with an $800 gift certificate for Air Canada, plus they put us up in hotel, with food vouchers, plus my Amex allowed for $500 in new clothing (cause we didn’t have our luggage) so we went shopping!!

“Plus there was a booth for Amex cards, so I applied for a platinum card and got free tickets to the airport lounge, plus 50,000 points good for 2 round trip tickets in North America!

“March: With the other half of the money from the bank, I brought my kids on a week’s ski trip at a resort north of Toronto for the first time!

“PLUS a new male interest asked me if I would like to attend a conference with him in Toronto, all expenses paid! No strings. There were flowers waiting and the staff at the Royal York hotel (fancy) had their seamstress sew purple pillow cases for the bed cause he knew I loved purple!!!

“April: PR I went to Florida with points to see my good friend’s new house.

“May: I flew to Toronto with points and stayed at some friends of friends place.

“June: I was taken to a fun weekend away in Sudbury, ON

“July: My kids and I were taken to NYC for 8 nights and treated to luxury and excursions.

“August: The same man, who became my b/f took me on a weekend to Toronto.

“September: I asked the Universe for a month off cause I was tired and kids started school lol!

“October: Went on a week to Vancouver, which was on my bucket list. All expenses paid by HIM!

“November: Went to a conference in Toronto, all paid since I am on the Board of a children’s disability center. Stayed at the best hotel. Found out I was a Marriott elite gold member. Got treated like a queen and upgraded. I didn’t stay at Marriotts enough so I don’t know why I have gold status but I do. I’ll take it.

“Also a dinner dance for a weekend in Sudbury.

“December: It’s the big trip. A 10 day cruise to Caribbean and Honduras! Using points and my b/f is paying.

“For 2017, I’m going to manifest funds for a children’s after school Center I want to start in my town.”

Too blessed to be stressed

“You have no cause for anything but gratitude and joy.”– Buddhagratitude-is-the-open-door-to-abundance

Happy Thanksgiving week, my fine-feathered friends.

To commemorate this holiday that I like to celebrate every day, I’m posting stories that have recently popped into my inbox.

This one came yesterday, reminding us that “Thank you” is always the correct answer. And that we should always listen to our soul.

Enjoy!

“Message: PAM GROUT YOU HAVE SAVED MY LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you!!! Always and forever!!!!!!!!
It has taken me so long to find the words to contact you, every other attempt was either completely in caps or just un-understandable!!!

“Oh crikey where to begin!!!!!!!!!

“A few years ago I tried E-squared and E-cubed experiments and they worked a bit but I knew I had major blocks on my frequency.

“I was on a mission to figure out how to release these ginormous blocks to my constant stream of magic and miracles. I found the work of Dr Joe Dispenza – active meditation that when applied fervently and ferociously can clear blocks to absolutely anything.

“As a result of doing the work to become aware of and release it all, I became happier than I had ever been before!

“Those folks who write to you that it doesn’t ‘work’? It’s just because they have blocks bigger than they know on their frequency! I know that for true, because I was one of them! Only I knew it was my thing to sort out, not your fault for telling us how to do it!!

“So I clear the blocks – I was living in a capsule of fear that I didn’t even know about. Major clearage happened and continues to as I meditate every day!!!!

“I get to the point where at the end of August, I really need to find a job and start living the magic I’m feeling deep inside me. But I still felt a bit stuck as to how to do that. I couldn’t turn back to my old life or ways of being, I had come to far on the river of change!

“Then your book Thank And Grow Rich was released and I heard my soul say READ IT.

“I downloaded it onto my kindle app on a Sunday night and started reading. The next morning my soul said ‘Don’t spend all day sending your CV out places. Read the book instead. So on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday I sat with notebook and pen and my broken screen phone (!!!!) reading the first part of the book.

“I started daily gratitude lists, and I wrote out the 5 principles (the 5 kinds of capital discussed in the book!!) over and over until I had memorized them and could put them into my own words and tell someone about them without needing the book in front of me! Then I wrote down where I was at with all 5, and wrote down ideas for creative and social.

“On Thursday morning I woke up and I heard my soul say ‘Walk up Webbs road.” It’s a street opposite me with cute shops on it but I don’t go there much.

“I thought, Ok I’ll walk there later. I decided I couldn’t ‘waste’ any more time reading and writing – I needed to get back to the job search.

“By 4pm, I had melted my brain. Staring at the computer with no leads and endlessly searching.

“My partner David calls and asks “Did you go down Webbs road yet?’ So I figure I’m melted, I need fresh air, I’ll walk there then meet my man at the train station.

“The first boutique I walk into is this cute little jewelry shop with interesting handmade jewelry and other gifts. It has good energy.

“I start chatting to the lovely lady and we totally hit it off, she’s Irish too!

“Out of nowhere I say, “I don’t suppose you have a job?

“She says yes! They needed someone for sales and marketing! I think, hey that could be fun, that’s my background – I’m an artist/maker and a ‘lets make this project happen’ consultant.

“The next day the owner calls me; we set up a meeting for Saturday.

“Saturday morning I meet the owner – let’s cut a long story a bit shorter here (!!!!) – her original vision was to have a shop that makes bespoke jewelry with meaning and interior products made by her husband a third generation London metalsmith! I say let’s do that ‘instead!

“By Saturday night I’m drinking CHAMPAGNE – I now have a full time job, AMAZING PAY, I’m the manager of the boutique, I’m designing the new jewelry collection, and I’m the consultant for the new venture, keeping the vision on track!!!!!!!!

“WHAT THE BANANAS!!!!!!!!!!!!

“I spend the next 3 weeks feeling like I am constantly on drugs and EVERY DAY since that week of BRINGING YOUR WORDS ALIVE INTO MY LIFE I have experienced EVEN MORE MAGIC AND MIRACLES – that’s like a whole other set of emails I’d need to write!!!!!

“I wake up each day and think I’m the happiest I’ll ever be and the next day I wake up even happier!!!!!! It just doesn’t stop!!!! Magic everyday!!!!! I’m learning how to be too happy!! There aren’t any books about that yet!!! I feel inspired to write one!!!!

“I wanted to meet like minded people and as you always say – if you can’t find a group – start one! So I did! A meetup in London called Magic and Miracles!!

“It’s SO MAGIC I could burst!!!! We’ve had one session so far, I can feel the energy and power in it growing and growing!!!!!

“We share our daily gratitude list!!

“Pam THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“Anyone I share the 5 principles with have immediate results!!!

“One friend – one hour later – huge investment in her business!

“Another friend – a few hours later – offered a £60/hr job!!!!

“My miracles continue – in my relationships, in my own creative projects, in each of the 5 principles!!!! Alchemic, Spiritual, Creative, Adventure and Social!!!!!

“These were the missing pieces for me. I didn’t know how to live a happy life because it really wasn’t one that I was living before. You have helped me see how to do that and let the magic that’s there all day long flow effortlessly to me.

“I link arms with you in my mind while we skip everywhere spreading immense joy!! I join your joy ambassador-ship!! I join you in being a PR woman for the universe and its magic and miracles!!! All day long I serve!!!

“Nature sent and continues to send many signs, birds, herons, robins, they arrive when I need to be reminded of truth! My friend who passed on last year is very present and even more so since I started all of this! She made herself known to me in the most magic way!!! And im being constantly shown that anything I’ve held on to as truth is nothing but pish posh! Blah! That just isn’t real!!!!!!

“I could keep writing but really Pam there’s only one more thing for you to know. I send you a CONTINUOUS stream of Thank you. All day long. Always and forever.

“I hope one day we do meet and skip our way through life!

“I send this out to the universe with all my love”

Why I’m the luckiest person on the planet, Part Six.

“We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures.”
― Thornton Wilder

Some mornings when I’m running to pickleball (no need to be impressed. It’s a mere one block away), I repeat over and over in my head, “Thank you, God. Thank you, God. Thank you, God.”

And I feel so joyful, so lucky. I’ve found that the more I focus on my blessings, the more blessings knock on my door. It’s like Halloween night when so many adorable ballerinas, princesses and even miniature zombies show up to delight me. And all I have to do is provide a bowl of candy.

Yesterday, one of those blessings showed up in the form of Kris Carr, the bestselling author of Crazy Sexy Diet, Crazy Sexy Kitchen and lots of other yummy books.

She’s a former New York dancer, actress and photographer (all things that impress the heck out of little old Kansas me) who overcame cancer by changing her diet, boosting her immune system and focusing on the body’s natural healing power.

Yesterday, in a complete surprise to me, she wrote about E-Squared on her blog. Now, this is a celebrity who has been on Oprah. And because she was kind enough to mention her experience with the Dude Abides, the first experiment in my book, she introduced her millions of fans to little ole me.

Here’s a link if anyone cares to check it out.

So, thank you, Kris Carr, thank you, “Dude” and thank you to everyone who makes my morning affirmation “Something amazingly awesome is going to happen to me today” come true day after day.

In honor of Thanksgiving, tell me in the comments section below why you’re the luckiest person on the planet.

Abundance, hoarders and why I’m a whole lot richer than Donald Trump

“I wanna be on the cover of Forbes magazine
Smiling next to Oprah and the Queen.”—Travie McCoy and Bruno Mars

I didn’t make Forbes’ list of billionaires in 2013. Unlikely, I’ll make it next year either. But I do know a secret that makes me deserving of the list.

I know with complete certainty that the world is limitless, abundant and strangely-accommodating. I also know that anything I could ever need or want is as easy to manifest as plugging in the toaster.

Take the last couple months, for example. I’ve spent the night in a Sultan’s Palace in Istanbul, the same palace that hosted Oprah, Madonna and Kobe Bryant. I’ve been on safari in Namibia, walked the beaches of Florida’s Anna Maria Islands.

Those billionaires? I doubt they could spare the time.

In fact, the only difference between me and “The Donald” is I choose not to carry my riches around. It’s comforting to know that anything I could ever want to do is available to me, but why flaunt it or drag around a bunch of material baggage?

In fact, I’d like to argue that amassing $7 billion, the dollar amount Trump claims to be worth, is not that different than hoarding old newspapers, leaky buckets and all the other junk collecting in the homes of the dysfunctional folks we watch on the A&E show, “Hoarders.”

No, my role model is Peace Pilgrim who, when she was very young, made an important discovery: “Making money is easy.”

Which is why she could give up her earthly possessions and walk around the world with nothing but the clothes on her back. As she said about her 28-year-old journey, “Life is full. Life is good. I have a feeling of always being surrounded by all of the good things, like love and peace and joy. It’s like a protective surrounding.”

That’s all anyone really needs. To know with sure conviction that “the world is limitless, abundant and strangely accommodating.”

Seems like a pretty good Thanksgiving notion to me.
