The Taz Grout 222 Foundation was launched to honor Tasman McKay Grout who spent 25 short years on the planet inspiring everyone who knew her to live and love better. Everything she stood for was some variation of this theme: create relentlessly, love fiercely and do quiet, kind things for the underdog.
Each year on February 22, the 222 Foundation awards a $12,222 grant to an innovative project or person with a big idea to change consciousness and therefore change the world.
We look for projects that support the following ideas:
1. A change in perspective is our greatest need. We believe all people (no exceptions) long to be generous and create beautiful things.
2. Today’s hopelessness is based on false premises. We look to defy the old story of scarcity, lack and the need to fight for resources. We aim to prove that the universe, once liberated from no-longer-working paradigms of scarcity, is generative and endlessly abundant.
3. The us against them model is kaput. We believe all humans are interconnected and that even tiny actions have great significance
“There is a path toward the light. The one that goes blink, blink, blink inside your chest when you know what you’re doing is right. Listen to it. Trust it. Let it make you stronger than you are.”–Cheryl Strayed
I just returned from a glorious 10 days in Peru. Visited Machu Picchu and Cuzco, stayed in a 350-year-old manor house where Simon Bolivar was living when he liberated South America, gave a workshop in Lima and had the best time with my daughter who is home from college for the summer.
Because there’s a Mount Everest of laundry and a to-do-list that nearly fills my beloved notebook, I decided to re-run a post from a couple years ago about the power of our words. And as some famous person (General MacArthur?) once said, “I shall eventually return.”
Enjoy!
I was interviewing a business owner a while back. We got off topic (imagine that) and she made a comment that made me consider reaching out and giving her an inappropriate bear hug. It was a simple comment, one I’ve heard (probably even said) many times before. She was upset about a particular issue that shall not be named and, in resignation, threw her hands in the air and said, “If it’s not one thing, it’s a thousand others.”
Her rant almost seemed like a foreign language to me. It wasn’t that I was offended, but it had been so long since I’ve thought that way or really even been around people who aren’t aware of the tremendous power of their words, that I sat there dumbfounded.
Now, I’m not this woman’s coach or counselor, but I wanted desperately to comfort her, to explain to her that every word that drops out of her mouth is sculpting her life experience.
I wanted to warn her, to help her understand that whatever she believes and yes, utters out loud, will be seconded by the the great universal energy.
I know. I’m probably like the annoying ex-smoker who no longer has patience for friends still practicing their former vice.
So instead of lecturing her, instead of suggesting that if she wasn’t more vigilant, negativity, like a body snatcher, could eventually take her over, I held my tongue and thanked the blink, blink, blink pounding in my chest for showing me a better way.

“Lay your interfering thoughts aside.”—Course in Miracles

My thoughts provide an endless source of entertainment. Most of the time, they’re busy replaying the past, or constructing a future.
Instead of living in “The Holy Now,” where miracles are natural and joy is unstoppable, I put up a barrier. I let the past direct the movie of my life.
By believing today is going to resemble yesterday (and we all do—that’s how we decide things) we leave no room for change, no room for all the good the universe is trying so hard to bestow. There is a HUGE stockpile of blessings just waiting for you to lay down your continuous reactivation of the past.
Over and over, instead of viewing the delicious juiciness and endless possibilities available in this now moment, we plan the future using yesterday’s replay. The present has gifts of its own, but we keep returning to yesterday. Hard to believe, but the present doesn’t need our help!!!
As the Course in Miracles so clearly states, “Without the continuity of old ideas and sick beliefs, present confidence will direct the way.”
Every time, I head out on a new trip (as I’m doing today, going to Peru with my daughter), I decide in advance that I’m going to have a great time. I picture amazing adventures, laughter, everything working out with ease and grace.
Well, guess what? That’s exactly what I get.
Pre-paving is powerful mojo. Just make sure you don’t pre-pave the past. Pre-pave something unexpected, something unlimited.
Once we let go of all our planning, all our struggling and all our beliefs that it’s our job to figure life out, the universe, whose only purpose is our good, will flood us with blessings.
Without defenses, fool bullheadedness and insistence in living everywhere but in the now, we can expect joy that constantly increases. And that’s dignity!

“Let’s live, baby. Let’s feel alive at all times. Make this moment your reckoning. Your head has been held under water for too long and now it is time to rise up and take your first true breath.”― Brian Krans

Kids’ computer games have undoubtedly evolved since my daughter Taz played them on the giant desktop (compared to today’s laptops, that early Gateway is a veritable behemoth) in my office.
But back then, she had several games where, by pointing a cursor at an item in a scene, it would came alive. For example, if she clicked on a cupboard door, it would open, music would play and a duet of dancing mice would pirouette across the shelf. Or she’d click on a flowerpot and it would shimmy and shake until its beautiful red petals rained to the ground.
Life is a little like those old computer games. When you put your attention on something, it literally comes alive. If you put your cursor on all the opportunities and love in the scenes of your life, that reality comes alive. But if you continue to click on the monsters under the bed, they, too, are more than happy to put in an appearance. The thing is we’re the ones manning the dials. We’re the ones deciding where to point our cursors, where to send our attention.
Here’s something that drew my attention last year. I loved it and like to re-run it every now and again, because it’s a good start to a weekend that better include dancing.

This is getting crazy.
I just heard about two college professors at two different colleges who assigned, E-Squared. For college credit. One is even going to send me her students’ papers which, as she said, were “pretty amazing.”
And someone sent me this picture of Andy Dick, the comedian, actor and Season 16 Dancing with the Stars competitor, who is apparently reading it, too.
With the new book, the one I’m writing now, I throw down an even bigger gauntlet. Full-time joy. Constant contact with the Divine Buzz.
Because the more joy you have in your life, the better life works. The more gratitude you feel, the wider the door opens for life’s largesse to flow in.
In fact, the ONLY thing that can keep it away is the walls we all build with our crazy thoughts. But once we quit believing our ridiculous, crazy-making thoughts, once we start trusting that joy is our natural, God-given state, all the security forces in the world can’t keep our good away.

there are infinite possibilities
and a parallel reality exists for each possibility.”
–Daniel Jackson, Stargate
Imagine this? A foreign exchange student from a tiny African village with no running water or electricity comes to the West and gets dropped off at a hotel room. The hotel maid, who has a giant crush on George Strait and loves to listen to the local country and western station, forgot to turn off the radio when she finished tidying up the room. Hours later, the student walks into his first hotel room ever to find a radio playing non-stop country and western music and loud, obnoxious ads.
He much prefers the drumming of his little village, but unfortunately he has no idea that a) the radio has an off switch or b) that, at any time, he could simply move the dial to a different, more pleasing station.
Hopefully, the above scenario has never happened, but it’s a perfect metaphor for life. An extensive line-up of music stations with an immense variety of options is available for anyone with a car, a boom box or a computer with Pandora.
Life, too, offers a dizzying choice of consciousness options. We can choose joyful thoughts or thoughts of fear. We can choose to celebrate or worry. The station we tune into is completely up to us. It’s the most important decision we ever make. Our consciousness channels create the quality of our life.
Most of us are like the exchange student, stuck on one channel and unaware that, at any time, we could pick a different reality. We are the captains of our fate, the master of our mind’s channels that all too often get stuck on an endless loop.
Before long, we start believing that reality is nothing but the loud, obnoxious C&W station playing in our consciousness. We fail to realize that a) there’s an off-switch, b) there are lots of other channels and c) the world only appears the way it does because, in our ignorance, we chose the wrong channel. Isn’t it time to change the dial?
