Taking the wrecking ball to worn out mental constructs

“There comes a point when you know, without doubt, without hesitation, that you cannot go back to your old life. You cannot be who you once were and also have a new life with new riches.”— Julie McIntyre

past
The past sometimes comes in handy. Like when I’m ordering a pair of sneakers on Zappo’s.

Eliminates a lot of back and forth shipping if I know I wear a size 9. Or when I come to an intersection. Knowing what that red octagonal signs mean prevents a lot of unnecessary collisions.

But other than a few useful details, the past is mostly a prison. It prevents me from seeing and experiencing life as it is now.

Instead, I see my labels, my prejudices, my judgements–all constructs that block the Truth. When I continue to regurgitate my past, the glorious field of infinite potentiality (the FP) can’t get in. Nothing can ever change.

Lesson 8 in the Course in Miracles is: My mind is preoccupied with past thoughts.

I know it might seem rather pointless to look at my thoughts and call them out as the posers they are.

But it doesn’t matter what I think of the exercises. It just matters that I do them. What’s really pointless are all the decisions and assumptions I made about what’s best for me in the past.

The Course is about letting go. It’s about giving up old mental constructs and surrendering to the all-loving, all-powerful energy force that’s bigger, bolder, brighter, and, yes, stranger than anything I’ve yet seen.

This Sacred Buzz is life itself. Life, which—no matter how many walls I erect, no matter how seriously I screw up—is always there waiting with arms open wide.

  1. Love your stuff as always. One thing: the word judgment doesn’t have the e in the middle.

Happy New Year, great things ahead and Go Dawgs!

  3. I just love these new posts on ACM! Actually it explains a lot that I missed when I first read the lessons. Please keep doing this!!

  4. Pam this is a timely reminder. I am writing a book about the life lessons I learned from animals when I was a child. I realize my life was not as bad as I remembered it to be. When I complete this book, I can release even more of what no longer serves me. Blessings,

  5. Pam, I cannot thank you enough for doing this! I read all your books and recommendations for other books as well. I tackled the Course in Miracles a few times but found it very difficult to understand and gave up. You are helping so very much by doing this – through your comments and examples I am getting it! Please keep up the lessons if not too much trouble, you have one avid student in me.
    Love and appreciate you,
    Susan

    1. Thanks, Susan. The Course can seem REALLY wordy. But as I like to say, it’s not really hard. It’s just very different than the way we’ve been doing life.

  6. What a wonderful exercise! I did it for 2 min, my mind was just blank! Y was feeling the breeze form the fan, trying to think about something, about worries, but nothing. But, after I finished and went on doing something else, the mind chatter was back! I believe my mind knew I was sort of tricking it with the exercise! Haaaaaaa haaaaaaaaaaa 🙂 ;.)

  7. Thank you for this post. It reminds me of a group ministry program that I was facilitating some years ago. We actually had a burning ceremony for our past trials and troubles, safely outside, in a big metal trash barrel after we wrote down all the “trash” from our past lives. Each member participated with a list that was either private or read, according to preference, and we had a celebration after with cookies and coffee or tea. It was an uplifting experience for all. Thank you for the reminder I needed today that some past can be positive as well as healing when handled well.

  8. Loving all the ACIM lesson emails so much!! 😍😍😍 thank you for always writing in such a joyful, understandable and approachable way. Thank you 😊

  9. “What’s the Buzz, tell me what is happening” Sacred Buzz makes me hear that song from Jesus Christ Superstar☆ in my head. Lol! So much freedom in just letting go of what was! Thank you, Pam for guiding us in these lessons .

  11. Hiya Pam 🌼 Thankyou! This is the third year in a row I’ve started ACIM and petered out, so I LOVE 😍 Having you along for the ride!!! (If you have a more pressing idea at any stage we’ll all understand I’m sure. So no pressure) but for now, for me, your daily insights and clear explanations are so so welcome. Love for you Pam
    Kind regards Maree 🐞

  12. Thank you so much for sending these lessons daily. I had looked at the Course of Miracles several times and gone to a few meetings but it didn’t resonate with me. You have the ability to make everything so much fun and happy that I am loving them all.
