Breaking free from the algorithm

“Sometimes you have to jump out of the boat.”– Rachelle Jeanty

One of my beloved correspondents sent me this hedgehog yesterday and happened to mention she was dealing with a heightened case of JOMO.

Unlike FOMO—the fear of missing out—JOMO is the exact opposite. It’s a state of ecstatic bliss (JOY!!) that comes from not paying attention to the news or the algorithms that right now want us to think we’re all doomed.

Social media companies know that titillating tales of woe are a potent tool for gaining eyeballs and capturing our attention.  Their pre-programmed algorithms can best be described as a digitally-fueled, dopamine-releasing game of aint it awful!

By their very nature, algorithms have allegiance only to the past. They give us a story line that reflects what we paid attention to yesterday.

Built into their design is distraction and an agenda that prevents us from the realization that what they’re showing isn’t necessarily true. An agenda that fails to mention that these stats and data are but one tiny superposition in a universe with a bazillion better and more beautiful superpositions. An agenda that intercepts and blocks our inherent knowledge that IT. DOESN’T. HAVE. TO. BE. THIS. WAY!

Algorithms and their twisted narratives reduce us to mere spectators who have forgotten that our attention grows things, that our attention turns our thoughts into material reality.

We humans have agency and power over what is happening here.  At any time, we can “miss out” and find the joy. We can stop scrolling, stop adding to the hysteria and turn our attention to the unseen power that has zero interest in the past.

Within each of us is that connection. We don’t need a computer or a modem or a FB profile. This ability to change the narrative, to imagine a new world is where the real levers of power lie.

Rather than attend to probabilities, algorithms and headlines reflecting yesterday, let’s open ourselves to a radical new mind shift, a new collective reality of peace and prosperity for all.

JOMO and #222 Forever!

  1. Absolutely brilliant! This is so true, and sometimes I forget it. Thanks for this magnificent reminder. We are Creators, and we can put our focus where it serves us and all best. So glad to be reminded!

  2. My life is lived focused on what Jesus said in Mark 11:24. “I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe
that you have received it, it will be yours.” NLT
I have used this to find a house when moving to Miami, to find a job, etc. It always works.

  3. I haven’t owned a TV in 20 years, I stopped watching the news etc. long before that. I never wanted all that negativity in my life. I didn’t really know why at the time but now I certainly do. My family thinks I am out of my mind for not wanting a TV in my house and they are very negative in their thoughts despite my positive attitude all of my life. They will come to light in their own time. Thank you for all you do.

  4. Thank you Pam!!! The awesomeness of your posts just keeps fillin me up with JOY, GRATITUDE AND LOVE…Indeed BLESSED to have you in my life!
    Love,
    Kate in Carmel…

  5. Thank you Pam.

Your posts are always a beautiful reminder that love, light and consciousness are the truth.
You give me hope and certainty. I love you. 🙏🏻🥰❤️

  6. Yes! Amen! The JOMO will save the day! 😁 I have long experienced the ‘JOMO’ regarding the News, and more recently I have taken a break from Facebook and Instagram and I LOVE it! It’s so freeing to let go of the FOMO and discover the JOMO in its place. 🥳
I love how you say that “our attention grows things.” I haven’t heard it put quite that way before and it really caught my attention! I got an image of a garden with plants growing and flourishing, and it helped me see how we can either grow the weeds of hatred, racism, fear, and poverty in the gardens of our minds and in our communities, or we can choose to grow beautiful, healthy plants of love, prosperity and peace, and that whatever we choose to focus on the most is what will grow. Yes! So thank you Pam for this excellent post today reminding us of how helpful, healing and necessary the Joy of Missing Out can be for us all. Heaps of love to you from me! 😁💖🥳💜🤗💖😘

  7. I always read and never reply to what Pam has to say but this one is the one that should be read by everyone. We need peace not turmoil.

  8. As with most everything your write, I want to tuck this behind my ear so it’s handy enough to pull out and read often. And as Jenny Louise commented, I also adore your wording in “our attention grows things!”, which feels more tactile that my usual go-to phrase of “whatever we focus on expands”. I shall be using your words as my new mantra! Thank you so much Pam -you are truly a guardian angel! Sending much love and gratitude. 💕

  9. I needed this reminder so badly. Thank you! Focus on the beauty. Focus on the kindness. Focus on the infinite possibilities. Look for and expect to see the kindness, beauty, and love, and that is what you will see! Detach from the fear-driven, negative narratives that we are being bombarded with daily!

  10. AMEN…I had a moment of insanity on Monday night and thought I would tune into MSNBC and Rachel Maddow as it has been a while since I stopped watching the news channels…within 15 minutes of which some were commercials I had to shut it off…I could feel the energy shift and I didn’t want it…
