Why I’ve learned to back away from the dials, ma’am

“The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.”–Socrates

A friend posted this query on Facebook the other day, “Your best advice in four words or less.”

She got lots of great answers. One of my favorites was, “Spread love. Spread love.”

While I didn’t post my own four words, I did think about it. And finally decided that what works best, at least in my own life, are these four words from A Way of Mastery.

“I need do nothing.”

Yes, I said nothing. Zero. Nil. Jack squat. Zilch.

I’ve discovered that, more often than not, I get in my own way. I start thinking I know how to make something happen. I start hatching schemes, composing plans, all of which are laughably limited and focused on self-preservation, survival and looking good.

The bigger thing always has a much broader, more loving perspective.

In fact, once I got over the crazy notion that this bigger thing expected something from me, something like penance or poverty or obedience to man-made commandments, I was able to let it do its glorious thing in my life.

This bigger thing, I now know, wants to bless me, to guide me, to interact with me.

But when my hands are so tightly clutching the steering wheel it can’t make contact.

God, the universe, the field (or whatever synonym you like to use) is literally blocked behind my schemes and intentions and seven steps to this or that.

I’m not saying I never create an intention. I just know that my limited tiny brain has a very small vantage point. And that the less I do, the better my life works.

  1. I love this so much! For the past two weeks, I’ve been getting messages from the universe/FP/Source/Divine/All-That-Is that I need to BACK OFF and trust. That I need to stop pushing and striving and sweating and striving. Now, that message gets underlined yet again. Wheeeeee — it must be true! I’m not at all religious, but I’ve found myself repeating a phrase over and over: “Thy Will be Done.” It’s been my mantra and I didn’t even think it up. It just dropped in, along with all the great messages, including yours just now, Pam. Deeply grateful. And breathing deeply. 🙂

  2. The problem is that there are many dials that we MUST turn. Like working and such.
If one does nothing, then we risk everything at least in the conventional sense. Which I understand is not what it appears to be. But you Pam, don’t back off. You do stuff, you write, you meet deadlines, you appear at workshops et al. And if you didn’t, you wouldn’t get paid, you’re reputation would suffer and it would be a vicious cycle downward. So sometimes doing nothing is not the answer. Maybe it’s the semantics, I don’t know. I believe one should believe that we are constantly being blessed, because we are, but I also believe that backing off isn’t always the right thing to do either. It’s the discretion to know when to act and when not to act. That will also contribute to our well being. It’s about balance as much as anything else.

  3. I just had a realization this morning that I should turn off my notifications from my calendar app for my tasks. I realized that it just ties me to what I think is the path to wherever I think I want or need to travel and creates needless stress, albeit sometimes ever so miniscule. This post is the Universe affirming my decision. Thanks Pam!

  4. Thanks for this fabulous message today! I had a significant manifestation this week that came with ZERO effort on my part!

Inspires me to play in the FP more and more. I also am having fun zapping worry thoughts. Really noticing a difference…I used to think I had no control over worry.

    Have a beautiful day, Pam!

    Love you!

  5. wow, thanks Pam, this is just what I needed today! This is Anna from CA, you are still welcome to visit me and students anytime! We are on E3 now and loving it! Loads of Love and Blessings, Anna Enea

  6. Getting out of my own way so Spirit/The Universe can bring in something so much better is my major challenge in Life, right now!

    1. That’s okay! I recently wrote three pages in my journal just saying, “It’s okay that I haven’t cleaned my bathroom. It’s okay that I’m having problems with a particular person.” And on and on…..

  7. Hi Moira, I thought you might enjoy Pam’s website and emails (i knew her from her Vail days). Peter

  8. Pam, your comment took my breath away. Of course. Need implies lack, and in the FP we lack nothing. It is right there, as close as our own breath. Thank you, dear friend, for reaching the wider audience with the truth that is true always.

  9. Hi Pam,

This post came just as I was about to write you an email telling something amazing that happened to me today: I was giving a ride to my aunt and her daughter-in-law this morning; at some point they started talking about changing cars, maybe this new Jeep that’s become much cheaper because it’s now made here in Brazil, and that can be seen everywhere lately. I then remembered the sunset beige car experiment and immediately saw one coming the opposite way.

I’ve learned to be so grateful for everything that happens around me I don’t even stop to think I’d actively manifested any of them. And the Universe clearly told me I don’t need to!

Hope my story brings a smile to your face! And let me know if there are other lessons to be learned from what happened today.

  10. I tell myself… today is the day I keep quiet…
    Durn that Donald Trump…
He keeps screwing my FP up…
Maybe tomorrow I will choose Zero. Nil. Jack squat. Zilch. 🙂

  11. Blessings to you for catching my wave. Do what you and love what you has been my motto for some time now. I remember distinctly the place, time, feel, and smell of when I made the conscious choice to turn over the keys. Instsntly, I heard the words … “Recalculating, please standby for new directions”. And life has been a fine and wonderful ride ever since!

  12. Well said, Pam! Mike Dooley puts it this way – Beware of the cursed Hows! It’s so easy to get drawn into grabbing the wheel / hatching plans. If we can focus on the goal and let God / Universe get us there, it really goes much more smoothly 🙂
