“Have you lived 75 years? Or have you lived one year 75 times?”—Wayne Dyer
I will be forever grateful that I got to meet Wayne Dyer last April at the I Can Do It conference in Denver where we both were speaking. He has been my mentor since I was in college and meeting him was like meeting God.
In fact, had he not written about trying the experiments from E-Squared, I might not be where I am today. Dr. Dyer, I love you, and I am so grateful for everything you have given the world. Your light will continue to shine forever in our hearts and, as my friend Elizabeth said, we are all so lucky that we now have another teammate on the other side.
In honor of this remarkable man who has meant so much to so many of us, I’m re-running this post from a few years ago:
If you saw “American Hustle,” you know that Jennifer Lawrence’s character Rosalyn was reading and quoting from Wayne Dyer’s Power of Intention. Never mind that it didn’t actually come out until 2004, 20 some years AFTER the time period of the movie.
The part that WAS accurate is that Dr. Dyer was definitely writing books back then. He has been inspiring and uplifting us regular humanoids for a good four decades.
As I mentioned in E-Squared, I read his book, Your Erroneous Zones, back in college and have been a huge fan ever since.
Right now, I’m reading his latest, a memoir called I Can See Clearly Now. Even though I’m only halfway through, I’ve already picked up three important fileables for my stash of “things I want to remember.”
1. All of life is interconnected. In E-Cubed, I write a lot about synchronicity and how, once we open our minds, we notice that the universe is constantly conspiring in our favor. In 1959, when Wayne was hitchhiking home from a naval base in Maryland, 590 miles to his home in Detroit, he was dropped off at a turnpike service area in the middle of Pennsylvania. It was 3 a.m., bitterly cold and another sailor, also hitchhiking, warned him not to stand outside too long. They were both bundled up beneath heavy coats and hats and once inside, Wayne realizes the other sailor is his brother Jim, hitchhiking home from Norfolk, Virginia. Coincidence? Or the workings of a universe who has his (and, of course, all of ours) back?
2. Your mind can heal your body. While stationed in Guam, Wayne developed a pilonidal cyst that caused a lot of soreness and swelling at the base of his spine. After witnessing the after-effects of other sailors’ surgeries, a sight that made him queasy, Wayne made an appointment with the head nurse and basically “lied,” telling her his cyst had disappeared. For the next several weeks, he took to heart a book he was reading called Psycho-Cybernetics. I love that Wayne is a reader like me and that he, too, has been greatly influenced by early authors. Written by Maxwell Maltz, a medical doctor, Psycho-Cybernetics touts the power of visualization. Wayne diligently practiced the principles and within four days, he healed himself. No more pilonidal cyst.
3.The universe works in mysterious and beneficent ways. While studying for his Ph.D, Wayne is given a book called The World of Psychology four hours before he’s scheduled to meet with his doctoral advisor. It was a thank you gift from a student’s mother who appreciated his talk at Mercy High School where he was a guidance counselor. When the book was presented, he’d already chosen a topic for his dissertation. But he felt a strong pull to immediately sit down and read one of the essays from that book. The essay, “Self-Actualizing People” by Abraham Maslow so rocked his world that he completely changed the topic of his dissertation–just hours before he was meant to commit. Needless to say, that serendipitous reading changed not only Wayne’s life, but the lives of the millions of us who have been inspired by his teaching ever since.
As he says in the book, “The laborers of fate were working overtime that September day in 1978. I had given that talk to the parents because the school principal was sick and asked me to fill in at the last minute. Had that not occurred, had the book not been given, had I not felt a strong compulsion to read that essay at that very moment, my entire life might have looked very different. I can see clearly now that these kinds of almost desperate callings are the work of something bigger than myself, but to which I am passionately connected. I have come to trust in the messages and synchronistic collaborations with fate.”
So thank you, Dr. Dyer, for being brave enough to follow your calling and, in the process, to pull the rest of us along with you.

Wayne has been a big, wonderful presence in our household for several years. Books, CD’s, calendar, in many of my husband’s and my conversations. And as interconnected as we all are, he and his teachings probably, ultimately, led me to you and your books. I can see the path in my mind, but it is a long story. He will continue to be a great teacher at the Marshall house. As will you! We will keep paying attention to all the miracles that Wayne, Pam and others have helped open our eyes to.
We are all lights–each of us here on Planet Earth. And now, we have some extra power from the other side. “Hi Wayne!!!”
I was so sad when I read the news, Wayne has been my guru, my mentor, since his first book. I learned so many things from him! He was a wonderful person and will be missed!

Wow, Pam…I’d heard Dr., Dyer on a program a few months back and knew he was dealing with illness, but had not heard today about his passing until coming upon your post. How wondrous for me that this a.m., while speaking with a fellow educator, I mentioned “All of life in interconnected”! I’d read several books this summer and w/o planning it so, each book I’d read was “connected” to the other books by a setting, a theme, a character, and so on! She laughed and said, “That because, as you always remind me, ‘the Universe works in mysterious ways,’ Donna.” 😉
Dr. Dyer was mentor, too, and I love our connection with him.
I am all the richer in this life because of Dr. Dyer.
We are all kings of knowledge from having had Wayne in our lives.

Like everyone else, I’m still reeling from the news of Dr. Wayne Dyer’s death. By way of coincidence (except there is no such thing as coincidence), I decided to skip church yesterday (Unitarian/Universalist Congregation of Grand Traverse, led by Rabbi Chava Bahle – see her TEDx talk and be blown away) and settled in on the couch to watch Super Soul Sunday. It was a repeat episode from 2012 featuring Wayne Dyer, talking to Oprah about his latest book “Wishes Fulfilled”. I have that book along with many other books/DVD’s/audio books, etc. by Dr. Dyer. Listening to him talk about the book, I grabbed it off my bookshelf, thinking “I’m going to read this again.” As always, his message resonated with me yesterday as if I had heard it for the first time. I dove into the book and spent most of yesterday re-reading it, underlining certain passages and renewing my intentions for my life. A nice long walk on the beach followed where I simply gave thanks for everything and everyone in my life. It was when I logged onto my computer sometime around 8 pm, got on Facebook and saw the headline “Wayne Dyer, dies . . .” followed by the message his family posted. Of course I was stunned and shaken by the news but at the same time I recognized the timing of his talk with Oprah (granted it originally aired in 2012) along with my re-embracing my commitment to his message and I sat up straight and said “WOW!” No coincidence, just a clear, loud message from the late great Dr. Wayne Dyer for all of us. We are all one.
We are all so blessed to have all these archives of Wayne’s brilliant wisdom. He channeled Truth and I love that it’s there for eternity.
Gorgeous tribute. He meant everything to so many – providing a practical pathway forward. We can’t be thankful enough that he was a light to our world. And that we found him.
Yes, light is the perfect description of Wayne. In some ways, I feel even closer to him now. He’s probably dancing around all of us, his millions of fans.
I regret not seeing him in person. We went to Maui once when he was giving a lecture, but we never got to see him. It’s amazing how we can convince ourselves that we have a ton of opportunities in life to do the things we want. I’m glad you met him.

I am a huge fan of Wayne Dyer’s ans was saddened by his passing. His Erroneous Zones made a deep impact on me in my college days. I owe him big time.
Me, too. I read EZ when I was in college. It was that first step on the Yellow Brick road for me.
I listened to Wayne’s HH show every week for several years and would like to have met him in person. Maybe some other time.
Anyway, his sudden passing was an unexpected shock to me – he just seemed like one of those people who’d be around for many years to come. And on August 10, I never suspected I was hearing his final Hay House Radio show.
But the world sure benefited for his having been here, and it was a great privilege to have shared the planet in this time with him. Glad you got to actually meet him, Pam.
His legacy will go on and he will yet be discovered by many.
But he will also be missed by many.
His legacy is infinite. Always great to see your comments, Dennis.

And it must have been a real thrill to actually meet the man who wrote that life-changing book you read so many years before.
So sad to hear of Wayne’s passing. He has guided my life through his books, tapes etc for the last 25 or so years. Because of him I have a greater appreciation of literature an poetry and the wisdom it brings to life. Bike am yoga, etc! etc! So glad that I got to see him in person and to have him sign one of his books for me. A great light has gone out. Thank you for all you brought to life- it has been a easier ride because of you. In all the years I have been reading books by wonderful people including you Pamwe met in London last year) it is only recently I have been getting Wayne Dyers news letters and was inspired to go see him in London I think next month sadly now not to be.I am now however inspired to read his books and know it will make big difference in my life.There is of course no doubt that he is continuing to work with you all for the good of the world so I’m not sure rest in peace is applicable.He will be in touch.

Along with you, Dr.Dyer was on my list of people to not only meet, but to have a conversation and “rub elbows with”! Since I got to meet and rub elbows with you this spring at your Omega workshop, I feel like I got to hit two birds with one stone (don’t tell the Audubon people!) because he was your mentor and had such a great influence on you! We are all truly connected through something bigger for sure. In the words of my favorite Physicist, Nassim Haramein “look for beauty and you will find the truth.”

The first time I read this, It did not fizz me or I did not accept it that you were making a tribute to our dear Wayne Dyer.
Yesterday my son called and told me the news. Interesting how you worded the your blog. His first book EZ he wrote “You can control your thinking. At a time that I was told by the medical profs that I could not control my thinking and that I would need to be drug controlled for my entire life. Dr. Dyers book I pulled off of the book shelf and presto I found a DR. who stated the opposite. That was 36 years ago. Of course he became my go to DR. His early writings are hilarious. I really got the point. I can control my thinking.

Thank you so much for sharing… In 2008 I was having horrible depression… I had not heard of Dr. Dyer until I just happened to see him on PBS discussing Change Your Thoughts Change Your Life… And that it did… Only I think he saved my life… I could listen to him forever…. And then a couple of years ago he introduced us to you and E2… All I can say is WoW!!! I am so grateful for still having YouTube and my collection of books and CD’s of his…
