Not only do readers send inspiring stories about the experiments in my book, E-Squared, but they also send links and TED talks and lots of related anecdotes. This one came to me last week, and after securing permission to share, I’m doing just that.

“I was a single mom of two little boys and each night we did our prayers, but it was more me telling them that what they focus on will eventually come about. When my oldest son was around 6 years old we were doing our prayers when he announced that he wanted a turtle, and that is what he was going to ask for.

I couldn’t back down from what I always told them and I didn’t want to put any doubt in his mind at all. But what was I going to say when he didn’t get this turtle after I had always told them this “asking for and believing thing” works! Oh well, I kissed him and told him to hold that thought, but as I turned my back I immediately started to worry about what was I going to say and how was I going to explain to him when this didn’t happen!

“At around 10:30 pm there was a knock at my door, and believe me it scared me silly! I cautiously went to the door and peered through the window. I threw me off when I saw my girlfriend’s-cousin’s-husband standing there. Now he didn’t have a very good reputation and we never talked to each other, but curiosity won over and I opened the door slowly.

“Very sheepishly and with reserve he stammered and finally just blurted out, “So sorry if I startled you, but as you know I work as the maintenence guy for the county golf course, and occationally I find turtles on the fields. I just found this turtle and put it in my truck to take to my two boys. When I was driving home something just told me that maybe your boys would want this as I always bring these home for my boys.

“So, uh, heres a turtle if you think your boys would want it. Uh … good night….” and he quickly turned and walked away. I was dumbfounded! and said thank you and accepted this turtle, and that was it! I was not on his route home, he had to go out of his way. We never spoke of it, and really we just went on never speaking directly to each other again unless we were in a group.

“The next morning I told my son and he just went along like “of course I got a turtle, that’s what I asked for” attitude, but to me it was mindblowing and proof that we should always have the faith of a child.”

3 insanely easy tools for making your dreams come true

Singer/activist/poet Michael Franti has a tattoo on his arm that says, “Today I pray for_________.”

Every morning, he gets out a sharpie and writes in his highest intention. Some days, he hands the sharpie to his partner Sara. Or he allows one of his fans, somebody who is going through a hard time to write in a request.

Either way, it’s a powerful reminder that every morning we get to decide how our day will go, what we want it to mean, how we will use our thoughts, our beliefs and our prayers.

Tool #2:

This insanely easy tool comes from Thomas Edison who, you gotta admit, accomplished more than most in his life. He says he never went to sleep without first making a request to his subconscious. Again, super easy and very powerful. You’re going to sleep anyway, so why not ask for answers.

Tool #3:

Be a permanent holiday-maker. Yesterday, I mentioned the perks of walking with childlike wonder. To a three-year-old, the world is endlessly interesting. There’s no such thing as a bad anything. Without judgment or critique, the world is free to accommodate our sizzling imagination.

We simply must get over the notion that there is reluctance on the part of Infinite Intelligence to provide our good.

Chris Michaels, a handsome and very wise Science of Mind minister, told a great story a few weeks ago.

He explained that when you make an intention (or pray or send out a ‘rocket of desire,’ as LOA students might call it), you must act with authority. You must KNOW that your words and consciousness are powerful.

Remember that bit in the Lord’s Prayer where we say, “Give us this day our daily bread?”

“Our daily bread,” say Chris, “is everything we need to live well and be happy. How bold. How absolutely courageous!!”

Notice that Jesus taught us to command.

He didn’t beg. He didn’t plead. He didn’t even ask. Or say, “Please, pretty, pretty please, God, send me a loaf of pumpernickel.”

Jesus knew his word had power. He knew that when he spoke, his word was activated by a law of energy that only knows how to deliver whatever is held in consciousness.

You don’t beg the soil to grow a plant. You simply put a seed in the ground and watch it grow. You don’t plead with your coffee pot to make your morning coffee. You don’t stand over it and say.“Please, God, I’ve been really good and I need some caffeine.”

No, you simply plug it in. You place a demand upon the law of electricity by plugging in your coffee pot. And you know with complete authority that within a few minutes you’ll have coffee.

We simply must give up this notion that there is a reluctance by God to provide our good.

There is no reluctance on the part of the universe to give you absolutely everything good you can possibly imagine. But nothing can be given until it is claimed.

Getting your manifesting ducks to quack in unison

Filmmaker Michael Moore, in a 2002 commencement speech, gave the following advice. “All you boys should learn that once you give up on that girl, she will come to you.”

In some ways, prayer works the same way. By believing we desperately need prayer or a miracle or something we don’t have now, we deny God’s truth. We suit up with the wrong attitude.

Any time we look for an answer, we make the false assumption that the answer isn’t already here. Praying for love or happiness or some other desired goal defeats the whole purpose. It assumes somehow that the outcome of life is still in doubt. It’s not. God’s truth is perfection, all-joy, all-love, and to crave some piddling commodity is believing there’s something else. You have to suit up with perfect confidence that you have the right for all that is good. In fact, you have to believe it’s already here.

To Jesus, prayer was not a matter of bribing God. It was simply understanding that the higher law of Spirit overrides the lower law of the mental and physical plane. To plead or beg or to act like it’s not here is to suppose duality, not unity. And unity is what we’re going for. To get those ducks lined up, to get all those waves in laser-like coherence.

Like a laser, touched for the very first time

I don’t know if you know anything about laser technology, but it works a little bit like Congress did on September 12, 2001. Remember how all those cantankerous old senators and representatives completely forgot they were Republicans and Democrats, liberals and conservatives? How the only thing in their minds were “I’m an American, by God” and they sang God Bless America” in one great, big unified chorus? Well, that’s how a laser works.

Unlike ordinary light, that has lots of different types and sizes of wavelengths, lasers have one size wavelength, each of which precisely reinforces every other.

This is how you want to pray. Or it is if you want to see something appreciable happen. When Jesus “prayed” to multiple the fish and loaves, he didn’t beg God to “make something happen,” he simply put all his thoughts into one laser-like formation, namely that abundance and plenty was his divine right.

In fact, the real reason Jesus was crucified was those in command thought he was altogether too confident. How dare he be so bold as to think he could make crippled people walk, lepers dance? But Jesus didn’t just think he could do these things. He knew. He knew the truth of who he was which made his mind a veritable laser. He didn’t doubt for one second there was plenty of food to go around. He didn’t stop to question if a blind man could see (after all, the gift of health and perfect self-expression is everyone’s divine right) or if that storm that so scared the disciples was real. He knew that he had the right to command the heavens and the earth. In fact, that’s the only big difference between Jesus and you and me. We’re still wondering.

If you go back to Aramaic, which as you probably know is the language Jesus conversed in, the root word of ask reveals more than a “well, if it’s not too much trouble.” Ask, in Aramaic, means a combination of claim (as in that deed to the land is yours) or demand. To ask for something in prayer is to simply lay hold of what’s yours. You have the right, and even the responsibility to command your life.

How can we be sure, you ask? Same way you’re sure two plus two equals four. Because it’s a simple, unalterable principle of mathematics. If you add two plus two and get five, that’s not the principle of mathematic’s fault. Likewise, if you’re not getting the answers you want from your prayers, that’s not God’s fault. It’s you that’s screwing up the principle.

With God, there is no variation. There is one perfect picture of health, abundance, joy, peace, love, and all that other good stuff. But because we, like ordinary light with its variety of wavelengths, have all these variety of thoughts, we create a lot of turbulence. But it’s not necessary.

Prayer that is focused through an integrated, whole personality is like a laser—a single, clear beam. It doesn’t matter who asks or how they ask God’s answer is always “love and light and peace.” That’s not only God’s final answer, it’s the only answer
