This year’s Nobel Prize proves our minds render reality

I was super jazzed to learn that the main tenet of my long-time spiritual squeeze (A Course in Miracles) was just awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize for Physics. The three physicists who landed the prize called it “experiments with entangled photons,” but to quote the Scientific American headline that announced it, “The Universe is Not Locally Real, and the Physics Nobel Prize Winner Proved It.”

What that means is that we, as observers, literally create the world from our minds. In other words, we’re not interacting with a fact-based world of material objects, but with our own perceptions. Yes, it appears that objects, our bodies, etc. are real and solid, but John Clauser, Alain Aspect and Anton Zeilinger, the Nobel award-winners, just proved the key supposition of quantum theory: that local realism is false.

This means that, when not observed, material objects are not there. Nothing exists until it is perceived. Like the first lesson of the Course says, “Nothing I see means anything.” And it goes on to say that I’m the one that gives everything I see its meaning.

This idea that nothing has a position until its observed has been a prediction of quantum theory for years, but it was so stunning that nobody could believe it to be true. It makes absolutely no sense. Even the scientists making the calculations figured there HAS to be a loophole. The Nobel committee, even though they didn’t like this crazy idea that the observer “creates” the “world,” finally consented to award the prize after Clauser, Aspect and Zeilinger were able to eliminate every single escape clause.

What this means for non-scientists like me is that I literally render the world I see from my own consciousness. The nature of reality is defined by how I choose to look at it.

This is throw-out-the-streamers news because it means that the parody of life I’ve thus far created can be rewritten. Individual consciousness, profoundly limited by senses, egoic ideas and cultural messaging, can surrender and synchronize with a vastly greater reality. I mean, how cool is that?

We can literally render a different world. We can relinquish our minds, our consciousness, our beliefs to a reality that transcends time and space.

So that’s my science lesson for today, folks. As I repeatedly say, “Go out there and have the very best weekend of your life.” #222 Forever!

Interesting jobs are the ones you make up

I heard an interview yesterday with Muhammad Yunus, the Bangladeshi Nobel prize winner who founded Grameen Bank.

Like me, he’s on a mission to overturn the dominant paradigm. The current economic model suggests that ambitious, talented people should go to college and then look for a job. With degree in hand, they should find a slot to fill within the existing structure.

But as Yunus whose bank gives out microloans points out, squeezing yourself into a slot is a limited ambition. By virtue of being human, you are innately creative. It’s in your DNA to be a go-getter, a problem solver. Fitting into a big machine will never be as interesting and satisfying as creating your own job.

Our culture, in case you haven’t noticed, is in the process of being rearranged. Thanks to the democratization of digital technology, anyone who wants to can create their own job. The tools are now available for all of us to be innovators, artists, inventors, entrepreneurs.

We live in a time when one person writing at the coffee shop can reach millions. We live in an era when anyone who wants can gain leverage and create a platform.

As Yusuf says, “All people are smart people. Being from a special business school doesn’t make you any smarter than anyone else.”

Right now, without securing another degree or taking another workshop, you have all the tools, all the resources you could ever need to create an insanely meaningful, productive and prosperous life.

Because here’s the thing. The world as we know it is toast. Nearly everything we counted on, invested in, believed in is, for all practical purposes, grinding to a halt. That’s why we’re seeing such dysfunction in the political realm. People who benefited from the old model are trying desperately to hang on in our rapidly changing world.

The old life plan (go to college, get a job) worked for a long time. It created jobs and wealth and lifted people out of poverty. But turns out, the American Dream, a term coined by Fannie Mae to convince two-income, post-World War II families to take out mortgages, has a Dr. Jekyll lurking in the back closet.

The only way to keep the old system chugging along is rampant consumerism. And besides, working really hard at someone else’s agenda will never satisfy our deepest needs.

But giving of our gifts will.

Any donkey can tear down a barn. But how many of us are willing to build a new barn, create a new world, an entrepreneurial world that works for all of us?

To echo the quote from Leo Buscaglia with which I began this post, your visions, your gifts, your creativity is sorely needed. I beg of you, please don’t deprive the rest of us of your unique vision.

The Deuce of Clubs is not the only card in the deck: Change your story, change your life

Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman was famous for saying “nobody understands quantum mechanics.”

So I won’t pretend that I do. But I do know that in the quantum field there are a gazillion superpositions. And that when we decide one of them is absolute fact (say, “the world is falling apart” or “life is really hard”), we make that superposition into a material reality. Our observing it makes it real, makes it solid.

It’s like choosing the three of clubs from a deck of cards and then forgetting there are 51 other cards in the deck. Only in the quantum world, there is an infinite number of cards–what I call the FP or the field of infinite potentiality.

When we worry about one particular superposition, we add energy to it. We solidify it into the material realm. When we call our friends to complain, when we watch the news with our mouths agape, we literally add weight to a hand of playing cards that needs to be discarded.

Worse, we completely forget there are so many other options, so many other potential realities.

You can play this particular hand for your entire lifetime. Most people will. Or you can throw it back in the deck and either draw a new hand or, better yet, create a hand no one has even thought up yet.

My new book that comes out Tuesday is all about throwing in the old hand, about creating a whole new world. One of the options, of course, is to pick a different hand from the existing 52 cards. And that’s a noble beginning.

As for me, I plan to start from scratch and create a different hand, a more beautiful and generous hand.

All of us have the power to do just that. We can take the bleeding and dying superposition that we’re currently seeing on the news, and throw it back in the deck.

We can choose a different vision, a different story, a different deck of cards.

It’s up to us, the observer, the chooser of the superposition.
