I am light and I stand before you to love you: A hopeful story about crime

“We are all connected; To each other, biologically. To the earth, chemically. To the rest of the universe atomically.” ― Neil deGrasse Tyson

What if you woke up every morning, knowing that you have everything you could ever need, knowing that your one and only assignment for the next 24 hours was to “be the light,” to spread love.

Might just change the world.

You might just be the 100th monkey.

Because we are all part of the big quantum mystery, every little act has cosmic significance.

No, we can’t do much about the big global problems. But maybe, rather than feel hopeless, we can change the particulars in our own life. We can love whatever is alive in front of us.

Here’s a true story I share in my new book.

A visitor to New York was pulled into an alley by a man holding a gun. Because she knew that, in Truth, nothing could hurt her, she reacted quite differently than the thief expected.

“Here,” she said to the young man who was holding a gun to her head. “Have my purse. You’re welcome to it. I know you think you need it. But I love you and God loves you are you are so much better than this.”

The woman who I’ll call Jean because that is not her name had long been a student of Truth. She knew she was love. She knew she was light. She knew she could never be in any real danger. And most importantly, she knew this young man was not “the enemy.” She knew a deep spiritual Truth. “Only hurt people hurt people.” She knew that if she were him, if she’d been in those circumstances, she’d be doing the exact same thing.

This is where connection is made. I’m you. You are me.

The two of them looked each other in the eye. And then he took off like a scared jackrabbit.

A few hours later, she got a call from the police department. The young man had turned himself in. He did three months in jail. As soon as he got out, he tracked her down to thank her, to tell her that her “love” that day, her complete lack of fear changed him at a deep gut level.

He has never gone back to crime.
