Kill the past and come back to life

For things to reveal themselves to us, we need to be ready to abandon our views about them.”—Thich Nhat Hanh

You’ve probably heard about the cicadas, how large swaths of the U.S. (maybe other countries, too??) are about to be invaded by 1.5 million of them per acre. The thing that so intrigues me is how these wingless nymphs have existed for 17 frickin’ years, feeding on the sap of tree roots, just waiting for their big moment.

That incredible patience and timing is a useful metaphor for my own life and for my dreams of a world that works for all of us. It doesn’t always appear that we’re making progress or healing our divides or coming together like we could. The world’s biggest secret (that we all really love each other) often seems buried, like the cicadas, two feet underground.

That’s why those of us who know about the invisible energy realm must fall in love with things we can’t yet see with our eyes. It’s up to us to call forth a new world.

Yes, it’s daunting to focus on the cicadas-to-be or our visions for the future, but once we surrender the past (or kill it as the above headline, borrowed from a Pink Floyd song suggests), the new world can emerge.

Thich Nhat Hanh once wrote about the sunflowers of France’s Dordogne region where Plum Village is located.

“Visitors to Plum Village in April don’t see sunflowers,” he wrote. “But the local farmers see them clearly because they’ve plowed the earth, sown the seeds, spread the manure.

“When something has not yet manifested, we tend to think it’s in the realm of nonbeing and when it manifests, it’s in the realm of being.”

But it’s all one thing. We can’t wait to see the big yellow flowers to say they’re there. They exist, just like those cicadas, just like the items on your vision board, just like the love and possibilities we often suppress with our rigid armor of perception.

The words displayed on my dashboard (“Everything always works out for me”) are unfailingly true. Even when I can’t see it. And I remember, it’s only a matter of time. #222 Forever.

  5. This is beautiful and so true. “We must fall in love with things we can’t yet see with our eyes. It’s up to us to call forth a new world.” I love those words, they speak to my heart.

  6. Thankyou Pam. These words have soothed my soul and lifted my spirits. And it’s so true – there are billions of things that exist even though we can’t see them. I love your idea that we have to fall in love with things we can’t yet see with our eyes. That’s such a beautiful and powerful way of thinking about – and drawing to us – all that we desire for ourselves and our world. And to know that even if we can’t yet see something we desire – world peace, a new job, an end to hunger – it’s here in the world of the invisible just waiting for us to recognise it. Oooooh, I’m getting excited! I just “got it” in a way like never before! Amen! All we desire IS here – it’s a possibility in the quantum world – and once we “recognise it” we draw it into physical reality. And if we “fall in love with it” before we see it, we create an even stronger, more powerful vibration to attract it from non physical to physical. Oh yeah! I get it! Thankyou Pam! I’m sitting here getting so excited I feel like I could leap from the lounge and land on the moon! 😁💃🌝
So yes, we have to fall in love with whatever it is we desire before we can see any evidence of it, just like the farmers who sew the seeds of the sunflowers can see them blooming vibrantly in their field as they drop the little seeds into the soil. A fabulous metaphor and beautiful image for us to take with us into our own manifestation realm. 🌻
Blessings galore to you dear Pam, and to anyone who is holding the vision for “a world that works for all of us.” May we keep the faith and love it into reality now. 💛🌏🌺🦋🌞

  7. So many sunflowers that I’m excited to see exactly what they look like in due time. 🌻 💛

  9. As much as yes, yes, and yes, right now I’m asking myself how much more suffering does the world need to experience to get more people to shift perspectives? Having done a lot of personal healing work, not much ruffles my feathers these days, but for the past few days one issue I’ve seen in the news recently has really gotten to me, and I can’t do much personally to change it. Time to do more healing work.

  10. Of all the people that I have yet to know, you are my favorite person! I can’t thank you enough for all of the pearls of wisdom. Godspeed Pam, the whole world needs you.

  11. I see a world where we work together, play together share with what we have and greed is a thing of the past. I see every human being taught to love our selves, each other and all living beings, our home Mother Earth, to treat all here living beings with love and respect. I see every human being living and working in sustainable manners.
    And so it is.

  12. Somehow, I missed seeing this. Found it tonight, July 3. And it resonates so much with me. I really needed to read it right now, this very moment. Maybe that is why I missed seeing it. Everything happens exactly as it should. Thank you!
