Don’t forget to show love

“Do things for people not because of who they are or what they do in return, but because of who you are.” –Harold Kushner1a2

I figure I have a choice. I can either read the political news which is the equivalent of dumping toxic sludge into my brain. Or I can read about superheroes like 5-year-old Austin Perine who started his caped crusade when he was only 4.

For an entire year, this mini superhero has literally put on a red cape and passed out chicken sandwiches at a homeless shelter in Birmingham, Alabama.

He started with his weekly allowance, but then Burger King got wind of his campaign and decided to pony up another $1000 worth of sandwiches. Steve Harvey threw in another $5 grand and before he knew it, little Austin was traveling to shelters all over the country.

Although Austin’s story has been making the rounds for about a year, I just learned about him. I particularly like the fact that he zooms by (like the superhero he is), tossing sandwiches and shouting, “Don’t forget to show love.”

It’s stories like Austin’s that the 222 Foundation is looking to support. And I am so glad that, in the next few months, I’ll be feeding my own soul with news like Austin’s.

Thanks, everybody, for showing so much love.

    1. Hi Marianne from Canada (and Pam),
I am a grand aunty of soon to be two girls and a step-grandma of 5 boys from Bellingham, Washington -and I agree! (about toxic tv and the Beatles) Paul McCartney ended his concert last week by repeating some words from the song he had just finished: “the love you give is the love you get.” Love is the answer and the Bible even says so. Pam, I too feel the toxicity of the political news right now. I am afraid to turn it on. But if we put our heads in the sand, then we cannot know what’s happening. It would be almost as bad as watching Fox News. So I wonder if that is what our US president is trying to do? Make us turn off the news? Because I have been following closely and feeling hopeful and working hard for the good of future generations of the world to get good political leaders elected, those whom have proven to do good for the world in the past. And now I too am afraid to turn on the TV. Is that how Hitler got people to turn a blind eye on what was actually happening? It’s frightening. I am interested in ‘A Course In Miracles’ but don’t see a link to it anymore on Pam’s newsletter. I think now is the time for me to focus attention on that route, perhaps. My Lutheran church in Bellingham needs a pastor and I am hoping we can find a graduate of ACIM who also could conduct a Lutheran service. Any takers? Bellingham is beautiful! Anyway, would love to talk to you more and will be up at Salt Spring Island this week and then in our boat for a month in the BC Gulf Islands. You can text or call me at (360) 961-4198. Would love to hear from either of you!
PS Thank you Pam for this story.🙏❤️

      2. So glad you two have connected. I’m still doing the Course. In fact, people seemed to like eavesdropping on my ACIM journey, so I wrote a whole book interpreting the 365 lessons. It comes out early next year. As for the news, I think it’s important to remember that what passes as “news” is really the “olds.” Once we quit staring at it, we’ll get clear guidance on how to move forward.

  3. Pam, This last week, my younger son would have celebrated his 50th birthday. He died when he was 18. I watched the moom launch holding him.

Grief does get better with the passage of time. Then something happens, like the moon laucnch aniversary and it comes flooding back. I am grateful I had his delightful presence for 18 years.

    Blessings, Nancy

    1. Thank you, Nancy! I am starting to appreciate what you said about gratitude for the–I had 25 years–with my beautiful, magical daughter. She was such a gift and I love that this life is a blink of an eye and that we will all have eternity together.

    2. DEAR NANCY

  4. This story has made my day. I’m getting a bit emotional thinking about all the good my little girls will do in the world xxx

  5. Thanks for making my day. I’m looking for nothing but good news (and blue skies) from now on.

  6. I love that this little one is so woke at his age! I intend that only good news is what I review, and know there are literally billions of people who are doing good and helping make this a better world, one smile at a time. Including YOU, dear!

  7. Thank you Pam. My heart has aches for you since I heard your sad news and now I am joining you with a shattered heart after losing my soul mate, love of my life and partner in everything for the past 42 years, 3 weeks ago. You have modeled grieving with grace and I’m grateful you are sharing your journey with us. You let me know there is hope. With gratitude, Val

    1. Dear sweet Val, There is definitely hope! You will be with your soul mate again. This life’s but a blip on the screen. Soon we’ll all have a big happy reunion! Sending peace and light and connection.

  8. I can’t thank you enough Pam for your posts that influence my whole day in such s positive way whenever I read them🤗🤗👍👍🙏🙏
    YOU ARE AMAZING!!

  9. Since reading your last few posts I have been seeing 222 everywhere!
Much love to you for your resilience and courage.

    1. I love living in a world with so many loving souls like Austin! He says he wants to be president someday and he plans to continue wearing the cape.

  10. Oh I just love this story! And it’s especially relevant to me today because I just posted my gratitude list on Facebook (thanks for inspiring that daily practise Pam!) and it included that I was grateful for the hug I received from the young homeless man yesterday when I stopped to give him a few dollars and chat. He was so grateful he asked if he could hug me and he had tears running down his face. I was so moved by his response that I cried as I walked away to catch my tram to work and I haven’t stopped thinking about him since. This morning I’ve been thinking about what we can do that is more meaningful for our homeless people, and just thinking about loving each other. In my post I included these words from Burt Bacharach and Hal David – “what the world needs now is love, sweet love.” And I added these words from a quote from Michael Leunig: “…it’s as simple and as difficult as that.” That song by Burt and Hal is one of my all time favourites and it’s still so true today.

Thankyou for this beautiful post and for the love you share with us all. We all need each other’s love no matter what. 💖💜💛

    1. Yes. I love that song, too! And, yes, it will always be true! Luckily, love is the only reality! The rest is just illusory.

  11. This is one beautiful, sweet story that has helped to uplift me this evening. I am currently a homeless female vet ( blessed to live with family) while being out of work now 1 1/2 months. I have unexpectedly had to relocate back to my homestate of N.C. after not living here since July 1991. Still looking for work & struggling with anger, embarrassment, and shame. So I thank you for this article.

    1. Glad you’re uplifted. Just know your current situation is a temporary speed bump. You are precious, my friend! Always will be! No matter what! I feel your light and your love.

  12. Too precious!

In honor of the full moon/eclipse I decided today I need to pull the plug on all the political history I’m reading to try to understand the true backstory of our many current crises. I get caught in the ole “ if we don’t know our history we’re doomed to repeat it.”

Trying to reconcile being a responsible global citizen with being a Utopian visionary..Sometimes the effort just cleaves my brain in two!!

Bless you and this wonderful foundation.

    1. I sometimes think we’re doomed to repeat our history BECAUSE we keep staring at it. Once we disconnect from the past, the new is invited to show up. Tomorrow can be completely different. That’s where my focus is!

  13. Dear Pam,
thank you for this uplifting story. The other day, the bill at my cat’s vet showed EUR 222.22 – even more 2’s 😀
I’ve got something for you and everyone here – shouldn’t you have already seen it – Cookie the ticklish penguin – made my day!
    Lots of love xxx

  14. “Thanks, everybody, for showing so much love.” – Pam Grout

Pam, what goes around comes around. Amen. Don’t stop believin!

  15. Wow, that is just the very best story. Thank you so much for sharing it Pam. Blessings to you & your family.

  16. Dearest Pam, you continue to be a treasure trove of inspiration to us all even if you can’t get out of bed somedays (we so appreciate your humility and authenticity). I felt (and feel) your loss to my bones as I also have a grown daughter whom I adore. You and Taz have both been in my heart since last October. This Ted Talk by a woman who lost her 3 daughters and parents in a fire (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwGUYG2BQ78r) contains an exquisite gem she found in the face of such an unimaginable tragedy. Carry on, lady of light, and know how cherished you are by your fans worldwide. Love, Alexa
