Mary McAleer loved going to church, a Unity church in Sacramento, California where her daughter, Shannah, was the associate pastor. She loved it so much that she started at the break of dawn with the first service, stayed to chat between services and then gladly sat through the same music, the same sermon at the second service. In many ways, Sunday was the highlight of her week.
Shannah picked her up every Sunday morning for her beloved ritual. One Sunday, as she pulled into the driveway of her mother’s house, she noticed that her mom’s trusty Oldsmobile Bonneville was missing.
“That’s odd,” she thought. “Where would mom have gone?”
She knocked on the door and like always, Mary was dressed and excited about another Sunday at Unity.
“Mom?” Shannah asked her. “Where’s your car?”
“Out in front,” Mary said, offhandedly, grabbing her purse, eager to hit the road.
“No, mom, it’s not out there,” Shannah said.
It appeared that sometime during the night someone had hotwired the car and taken off with it.
“Mom,” Shannah said, “We need to call the police.”
“There’s not time,” Mary said. “We’ll miss church. C’mon we can worry about the car later.”
“But mom,” Shannah insisted. “This is serious.”
“Ah, I’ll just get another one,” Mary said. “C’mon, let’s get going. We don’t want to be late.”
On the way to church, Shannah, still panicked about her mother’s stolen car, decided to humor her, knowing full well that cars are not easy to come by on a pensioner’s salary.
“So mom,” she asked, “What kind of car would you like?”
“A red convertible, of course,” Mary said.
When they got to church, Shannah, still frazzled about the unfairness of her mother’s situation, ran into a friend and explained what had happened.
“Her car was stolen?” the friend said. “Not to worry. I have a car she can have. It’s just sitting in the garage gathering dust. She can pay me if she wants to or drive it for as long as she wants. Problem solved.”
Shannah hugged her, thrilled that at least that part of the equation was accounted for.
“Oh, by the way,” she asked as she rushed off to prepare for her part in the Sunday service. “What kind of car is it?”
“It’s a red convertible,” her friend answered. “Hope that’s not too young for your mom.”

Many years ago, after a stressful week, my husband and I drove our old Ford van up to Sonoma to go for what we hoped would be a relaxing bike ride. Just as we got to the place we were going to take off, the entire back axle of the van broke and dropped to the pavement! I remember thinking “I can either freak out and let this ruin a beautiful day, or we can go for the ride and deal with this later.” To this day I’m so glad I made the decision to choose JOY!

I love your posts. You inspire me to rethink my thinking. I love the way you think and the stories you post are so exciting. I would love to know how you feel about Monsanto pouring millions of dollars into political parties so as to get laws that prevent people from suing them, labeling food, taking the democratic process out of our government. This is happening right now. All these personal stories are great, but how does this inspiring process work on a greater, world wide scale. Whole communities being destroyed because of fracking, Monsanto determined to take over world food sources. I know I sound like doom and gloom, and I sometimes feel that way. On the other hand, there are people like you who have great ideas about how to change thinking and believe in positive outcomes. So what would you say about these world issues that look so dastardly for millions and millions of farmers around the world, and the oil issues. How would your process work in these bigger, broader issues. We really are all one and it would be nice if that we as one moved more to the directions of human kindness and compassion, in big business. Perhaps it really is true that great things don’t happen, just little things done with a great deal of love.

I hope you are good.
And I also hope that you don’t mind a few thoughts from me on your concern… or should I call that your focus of thoughts? Well, it doesn’t matter what we call it… but it does matter how we respond to it with our thoughts and our feelings.
I’m sure Pam would have a thought or so on this, but here are mine:
First, and controversially, we are one.
What happens to them, happens to us. But then there is an ‘if’ in it. And that’s… what happens to them touches us if we pay attention to what happens to them.
What those with money seem to do with it that doesn’t seem to be of benefit to others, it’s the same as what’s happening right now on almost all of the western TV news channels. They are all broadcasting news, thoughts, feelings, ideas, choices, influences… but unfortunately, most of that isn’t good for our consumption.
So should we look for ways to come up with ideas that change the way the news corporations focus or should we use the tools we have to send different, but of course, better thoughts, feelings, ideas, and the rest of it… to the world?
I think you’d agree with me that as long as we are part of the positive ripples that are now spreading across the world, there’s nothing too big to be changed. In fact, we don’t even have to focus on what to change, but where do progress to.
As long as we progress, individually and as a community, the community of those in harmony with one another, the community like this one, the community that is aware that there the power out there that governs it all, I’m sure that there’s nothing impossible.
I’d worry about what am radiating as a person. And if that counts as far as the laws of nature are concerned, then my heart’d say ‘peace be still’.

Good old Mary! Great post. I had a car accident last week and am waiting for my car to be repaired, thankfully didn’t allow it to spoil my weekend and just got on with it. Got an awesome courtesy car whilst mine is being fixed, and best thing of all nobody was injured in the accident which could have been a very major catastrophe.

Experiment #4……Abracadabra Principle…..1, 2 and 3 were a breeze!!…I am so stuck on 4….cannot get it to work..and not sure why.
Initially I asked for a free movie pass, nothing, asked again a few days later and nothing. Tried something else…..a budda board. Still nothing. I re read your chapter several times….so I wonder what am doing wrong…maybe my intention is not intention/specific enough.? or my belief or what ??????
