Why it’s perfectly okay to have a negative thought

“What if right in that moment, it was quite beautiful the way it was?”—Grace Bell

Every thought is temporary until you decide to invite it in for martinis and offer to make up the guest bedroom.

Left unopposed, a thought, like a lightning bug, will blink right off, flit away, never to be seen again.

What happens instead is we notice a negative thought, we start swatting at it, we wonder why we have it, we come up with seven steps to get rid of it and we begin beating ourselves up because…well all the books say we shouldn’t have a negative thought.

Before long, we’ve joined a support group and built a shrine.

Instead of fighting a negative thought, I prefer to use my two magic words—It’s okay—and let it flitter away and disappear.

The same strategy applies for those things we dislike in our lives—say the latest credit card statement or the doctor’s report. “But it’s true!!!” you insist.

Once we realize that any thought, any condition is temporary, with no power, no charge except that which we give it, we can go back to our natural state which is joy and amazing awesomeness.

  1. Thank you for this, Pam! The anxiety may now subside……….I don’t want to be negative ever again……..oops! It’s okay! Practicing. 🙂

A very Merry Christmas , with an abundantly blessed New Year!

  2. I agree 100% about the negative thought..or two…to be honest mine are less and less…
But some negative thoughts one has to sit with…maybe they are reality thoughts….
here is one….my boyfriend watches teen porn..and then went and did some not so good things…when I found out..well…it was all my fault…
The negative thought is this….and should stay and visit awhile….”why do I feel I deserve a man who watches such filth…and then parades the effects of it onto those most dearest and nearest….”

  3. I find it easy to let the thought go past, until it has the emotion with it, then it is not so easy to look at the long list of creditors and the short list of debtors with that light “off you go” approach. ???

    1. And that’s okay, too. We all have our own approaches. And all of them are OKAY. My approach just happens to be light and off you go. But they’re all perfect. That’s the cool thing. It’s all perfect.

  4. Thank you…I have been flogging myself for a typo on an acronym that went out and fighting the entire thing…then a miracle appeared … You have the word apples instead of applies…this was not an error it was meant for me! I release and allow all the good to arrive for me today! Thank you! 🙂

    1. That’s so funny. I did change it. But I’m so glad “apples” was just for you. The funniest typo story was an old boyfriend who was applying for an editor job (this was back before the internet) and, on his cover letter, he misspelled editor not once, not twice, but 3 times. I suggested writing another letter correcting it and telling them it was on purpose. Gotta make the best of these situations. But indeed we all make mistakes and how juicy and fun they can be when we learn to embrace them.

      1. Pam, I did just that, and now I can smile about the whole thing, even more! 🙂 As always you inspire and elevate with your writing. Thank you.

  5. I finally figured it out. Why beat up on myself and stress out! Thanks for your writing. Its enjoyable! Sarah Israel

  6. Pam, why when I made an intention last week, (Abba…) and I expected it, and did what I read, it didn’t happen??

  7. A very wise Pastor I knew once stated in reference to negative thoughts, “You can’t keep a bird from flying over your head, but you can keep it from building a nest in your hair.” Wise words, Pam, thanks !!!

  8. I always appreciate your postings, oftentimes, they are refreshers for me. Thank you for helping to light up this world!

  9. I really appreciate your words, any time I finish reading your posts, I have to say: “I really love this woman”. I expect one day to meet you and share with you here in Kansas were I live (Junction City), but I want to meet you in Lawrence. Thanks for all your hard work to change the world.

  10. Just prior to reading this post I had been discussing with my wife the power of your “it’s okay” idea.

Anyway, the particular thing I like is it presupposes a trust in the unfoldment of events as purposefully beneficial – even though they often appear as obstacles to our wants when they occur.

  11. Excellent, timely and comforting advice. We can leave saintliness to those who’ve lived a few more times. Or think they have! (- oops, was that a neggie..? 😉 xx

  12. Thanks Pam Grout for all these great e-mails.  Love them.  Am learning so much.  Just so you know, this time there really is a typo, one of those spell check thingies that doesn’t check the spelling but makes a mess.  6 paragraphs down, “The same strategy applies” not apples.  My spell check came up with apples too.  I’m seeing a lot of these in magazines, really good magazines, that should never have typos but do.  I never thought of this stuff growing up, and actually rebelled against it being “every so creative”.  I still am, but Mom was a grammar policewoman, with a biological science major and Latin minor, and had it down when it came to grammar.  I thought grammar and punctuation was for someone else to do.  Ah the learning we do as we live.  Thanks again for these great posts and e-mails.  Jaquith Travis The Joyful Palette  –  Art by Jaquith

  13. Hello Pam, I do not use face book enough to know how to enter my proposed manifestations for 2015 for entry into your contest, so I hope it is okay to attach them to this email. Also, I have a little story to share with you about a request to the universe. I read “E-Squared” and still am occasionally making a request to the universe to verify it is working with me. Maybe I just don’t know what I am looking for because I don’t often become aware of its effects. But I loved your books.

Yesterday I asked the universe in 48 hours to give me verification that my intuition is working. Last night I had just finished combining ingredients for a new recipe. Some of the ingredients were pulsed kale, almonds, chia seeds and there were many other finely chopped veggies like beets. I was really excited to try the new recipe but had some cleaning up to do in the kitchen prior to sitting down to eat. So I thought I would place the dish in the refrigerator for a few minutes while I cleaned up. Just as I went to pick up the dish, I had a fleeting thought to cover it with saran wrap, but why do so when it was only going to be in the refrigerator for ten minutes? I moved to the refrigerator, opened the door and proceeded to move forward. I managed to hit the shelf with the front edge of the dish and pulsed veggies of all colors flew all over the containers and shelf bottoms of three shelves, and of course on the floor too. I was very frustrated naturally, remembering the time I spilled liquid jello in the frig. and that horrible clean-up! It would be a similar tedious clean-up that would leave tiny remnants in obscure places like those X-mas tree needles that hide and finally come forward weeks or months later.

Well, it occurred to me on my clean-up duty that THIS WAS the signal from the universe that my intuition was working. I didn’t take action on the message, but it was alive and working. COVER THE DISH! That would have saved the mess. Voila’!

    Happy Energy, Roxie
