CBS exec: George Clooney “not a leading man” or why you should never listen to “experts”

Heard a funny story over the weekend. As you know, if you’ve seen my travel blog, I have a thing about George Clooney. I like his politics, his sense of fun and you gotta admit, he’s not too bad to look at.

I was listening to a couple TV writers who came to Lawrence for a big arts festival over the weekend. One of them, a writer for Bodies of Evidence, an old homicide drama from the early 90’s, told us that Clooney was considered for the leading role of Lieutenant Ben Carroll, but a CBS exec was pretty clear: “He’s just not leading man material.”

Instead, the part went to Lee Horsley and George, in one of his pre-ER roles, played the sidekick, Ryan Walker.

So next time, your brilliant idea gets rejected or your dream hits a snag, just remember, “Experts and authorities don’t know everything.”

Another great George story came to me before my talk at the Awakened Expo in Atlanta in May. I’m new at speaking (as I’ve said several times, I call this “My Year of Speaking Dangerously”), and I mentioned my jitters to someone who told me this great story.

When George Clooney first went to Hollywood from Kentucky where he grew up, he stumbled into auditions, like every other newbie, scared and wondering if casting directors would even like him.

Everything changed, he said, when he made this one little tweak. He strode into auditions with the attitude that he was “the answer to that casting director’s dream.”

  5. Pam- I believe in magic and miracles. My dream is to bring my way of thinking to the world- I am a writer, thinker and altogether amazing beam of light. I know this! I love your way of thinking! It’s amazing – my goal has been to change the neural pathways in my mind so that I can live a lot of positive and powerful change 100% of the time. I have been working on what has turned into three books over the last three years. My memoir the sunrise of my souls bliss is going to help a lot of people who succumb to the darkness of grief and loss. It will offer hope to turn the corner and make the shift to once again choose to live an amazing life. My second book is called the magical guide to bliss- 365 days of uplifting positive insights. Since losing my mom in 2011, I channel her wisdom each day and share this incredible energy with the universe. My third one is called “la Bella farfalla” the beautiful butterfly, a child’s book on embracing the beauty within. I want my books to go out into the world and I want to be a part of the circle you are in. A place where energy is experienced in amazing ways in the field of potential!!!   7. I am the answer to suffering become optional. That is my greatest desire and it fuels all my writing and speaking.

    The enormity of that desire is not overwhelming because I know that all I need do is continue to grow my beliefs into alignment with it. The quantum field will take care of everything else – reflection my growing beliefs back to me in the form of my material reality.

    Additionally, my contributions to that desire’s manifestation are incredibly essential. Why? Because I am the only entity who can make my contributions; if I didn’t make them, they wouldn’t be made. How much more important could I be?

    And how much more important could any of us be?

  15. Hey Pam did you watch George when he first appeared on the early days of the Roseanne show? He was great! She gave him his break. Actually if you ever watch her old sitcom you will see alot of now famous actors making appearances that were then nobodies! Great to see that.

Pam, I was looking for a confirmation to my own situation this morning, as we go in to see our lawyer about our estate planning, etc. You gave me confidence to go in there and know I can handle whatever is handed to me.   21. Don’t know that I’m the answer to anything or anyone in particular, but I, too, have adopted the same tactic every time I’ve begun a new job. I identified my greatest fear (speaking in public, making friends, whatever), then acted like I wasn’t afraid in that one area. When people had no idea I wasn’t afraid, the fear simply left me. Changing jobs has been great for my self-confidence!
