Important 2013 update to Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich”

“You are already wealthy, but you have been taught not to experience your wealth.” –David Cameron Gikandi

In 1937 when Napoleon Hill wrote his now-classic tome, quantum physics was still in diapers. Einstein, of course, had posited his famous theory of relativity, but quantum physicists didn’t completely understand how it worked.

To tell you the truth, they still have trouble making sense of the crazy quantum world that is changed by simple observation. As famous physicist Richard Feynman was known to say, “Nobody understands quantum mechanics.”

However, we do know with complete certainty that thoughts produce energy (much like invisible radio waves) and that they have a significant impact on your life. This energy, in fact, provides the building blocks for your life experience.

The update to Hill’s material should be this: “Think and BE Rich.” Time is irrelevant. You can “be rich” now. Money is only a representation of your “wealth consciousness” and “wealth consciousness” which is the true source of your financial picture is available right at this moment.

Money—or what we think of as money—bills, coins, etc.—are merely tools that demonstrate a person’s “wealth consciousness.” And, in fact, according to David Cameron Gikandi, only 4 percent of money in banks (depending on the country) exist in physical form. Furthermore, he says, “Money is not real. It’s a shadow of something else.”

So by expanding your consciousness into the true abundance of the world, you acquire what is in you already. As Gikandi says, “You have more wealth capability within you than you can possibly experience in a lifetime. Nor do you need to know how to convert wealth consciousness into paper money. It happens automatically when you expand your wealth consciousness.”

In the quantum world, you are connected to everything. You already have all the riches you could ever imagine. They exist right now as probability waves. But that’s the problem. You don’t imagine them.

You keep focusing on what you don’t have.

So back to Napoleon Hill. He advises people to come up with a date when they want a certain amount of money. Sometime in the future. But the trick in the quantum world is to “be rich now.” Again, all your riches already exist in the quantum world.

Being wealthy is an internal state. As Gikandi points out, “It has nothing to do with the outside world. The internal state of wealth is a decision you make right now and you become it right Now. You need nothing outside yourself to make this decision. Do not attempt to get wealth. Be wealth.

“Even in a billion lifetimes, you cannot possibly exhaust the wealthy given to you freely by life. But you can “fail” to receive it by your own thoughts, words, action, and most of all, your chosen states of being.”

The only thing standing in your way is your “wealth consciousness.” Isn’t it time to quit “thinking and growing rich?” Instead, it’s time to Think and BE Rich.

  1. I’ve been a student/teacher of A Course in Miracles for 25 years. I have everything I need to exist, and plenty. Why would I want “more” illusion? How can illusions satisfy God’s Son (me). God is my only goal and I have him NOW. thanks anyway:)

    1. I too am a student of ACIM, and it tells us that the only sacrifice God wants us to make is our sense of separation from Him.

Any other perception of lack, then, can only be of our own making and not “true” – since we are, in truth, as God created us.

When you “Think and Be Rich,” you have merely accepted that you already are.

“Even in a billion lifetimes, you cannot possibly exhaust the wealthy given to you freely by life. But you can “fail” to receive it by your own thoughts, words, action, and most of all, your chosen states of being.”

That about sums it up !!

    1. I’m so glad I’ve found this blog and this post…
I’ve started reading Think and Grow Rich last year and I became crazy because the idea of come up with a date when I want a certain amount of money (or a certain thing) sometime in the future made me very anxious! I couldn’t see how it would happen!
So I stopped and this year I started ACIM. It’s strange but I see many similarities between they two. I think ACIM explains me better the ideas of Think and Grow Rich. It was an importante update to me! So I decided to look for “Napoleon Hill” and “ACIM” and arrived here! =)
      PS: excuse my poor English…

  3. Hello Pam! =)
This is a great post and it comes at the right moment. The only drawback is the moment one starts to doubt. It happens to me then I feel terrible for doubting. I wish I knew how to overcome those moments.

I loved your book and I did the majority of the experiments. The first one I got two massages for the price of one! =) (It was great because I was feeling very tired. )

When I asked for money I asked for $300.00 and got them. That was great! I get all enthusiastic about manifesting, but then when it doesn’t work, I start doubting and then I get upset with myself. =(

Thank you Pam for writing such a great book and I am anxiously waiting for your next book. =)

    1. One of the things I’ve come to understand about “doubt,” Julia, is that it is common – but also, only on the periphery of our thoughts – offering to intrude.

It really only has as much importance (and therefore “effect”) as one decides to give it.

So, I just recognize it for what it is; let it be, and don’t give it any juice (like fighting with it, or beating myself up).

      1. Thank you Dennis for taking your time to reply to my post. I really appreciate your comment and I believe it will definitely help me in respect to beating myself up for doubting. =)

  4. Hi Pam,
I just finished your book and loved it. I have done several of the experiments – I found more yellow butterflies than I could have ever guessed I would find! I am planning on doing the rest of them, but I am waiting for my husband to return the book!
    You are a wonderful writer.

  5. Hello Pam,
In October of 1997 I experienced one of the most magical week’s of my life. At the time I had not even known or heard of ‘The law of Attraction’. My experience was so awesome and mystical that after” it “happened I was driven to find out what the heck “it” was.. I began scouring the bookstores in the hopes of finding an answer. Bits and pieces of what I wanted to know came through in the books and teachings of Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, Abraham-Hicks etc. What I know now is that FP does indeed exist. I just purchased your book last Friday after reading about it on the Synchrosecrets website. I did exercise #2 on Monday afternoon and I picked butterflies. Tuesday went to work and picked up the newspaper only to find an article on the front page on you guessed it butteflies! My first client yesterday also said to me did you see the article in the paper on the butterflies? How much louder can the universe get? Well, louder. Yesterday morning I sent out the 101 Dalmations principle to my husband asking him for not a loaf of bread but to please cut the grass. I focused asking him my mind in a witty exchange about how nice it would be and how happy it would make me. Sure enough when I pulled in my driveway last night after work the grass was cut! Thank you for your book!

  6. So funny and so true! Just last night I somehow flipped my thinking about my wealth. I had been to a college fair with my son and I watched so many parents stressed out. Instead of feeling that way I felt like I so had this. I started seeing all the money I had and how easy this was going to be. It changed everything and I slipped right into excitement and pure bliss of how wealthy I am and how easily that would continue to grow. Great place to be as I create a new resume for a new job and career. Thank you so much for this post 🙂 hope to see you in Boston for the IP training!

  7. Some of the most spiritually rich and consciously evolved people have no possessions, no material wealth. Let’s be really clear here that inner wealth does not translate into material wealth. That is a completely unfounded leap of logic. Material wealth destroys the planet, displaces indigenous populations, and is inherently anti-spiritual. No spiritual tradition promotes the accumulation of wealth; in fact, they all abhor wealth-building. It is manipulative marketing to try to spin consciousness wisdom regarding inner spiritual wealth to be in any way linked to capitalistic, first world materialism. The link between the two does not exist, and has never existed. Writing books and blogs to make people think that one leads to the other is confusing, is setting people up for disappointment, and is distracting people from the real spiritual and hard regular work they need to do to sustain themselves on all their levels of humanity.

    1. Andrew, while it is true that material wealth HAS resulted in the misuse you point out – it is by no means INHERENT in it. Such has only been the decisions of those who believe that material insurance (wealth, etc.) is the obvious solution to their underlying belief in a world of scarcity.

Money and things just sit there, not caring who their owner is.

There is no need to stockpile “visible” wealth of any manner when one comes to trust the Divine to provide. And who could truly be more prosperous than that?

But that view is quite different from an “abhorrence” for the expression of God’s unlimited abundance; available to anyone; always, and at no one’s expense.

Is it possible the material universe is only an effect with a limitless spiritual cause?

      1. Thank you Dennis. I only hope that this book and others along its lines capture the attention of those whose focus us upon material gain, and offer new, expansive perspectives that shift their conceptions of wealth from the outer to the inner.

Promises of superpowers and furthering magical thinking in a community (new age spiritual community) already seeking something extraordinary is always an effective way to attract followers. So I get it from a marketing perspective. I trust the Divine is at work here to lure the folks in on the mundane, and unsuspectingly slip them a dose of the divine.

As an environmentalist, I am wary of attempts to engage people by feeding into the American materialist paradigm. Mostly wealth accumulation automatically translates into consumption, and consumption automatically translates into mining, deforestation, oil and gas extraction, and other environmentally devastating trends that we as a species must reverse.

As a hypnotherapist, I understand that the Law of Attraction has been a concept since the 1800s (see Wikipedia), and has always meant simply that “thoughts attract like thoughts”. It was always about taking control of your thinking so that your thinking patterns change and you stop holding yourself back from your dreams. It wasn’t until “The Secret”, which was clearly a marketing stroke of genius in 2006 to attract material-obsessed Americans, that Abraham and Byrne extended this concept to mean that thoughts actually affect our outer material world. And so it is sad for me to see people picking up on this marketing-created new-fangled concept of the Law of Attraction and to build extensions upon it, tricking people into artificial constructs of reality and personal growth.

As a Spiritualist, a student of shamanic healing and of many world spiritual systems, it is obvious that the only form of spiritual growth and evolution is through working to be more loving – loving one’s self, loving each other, and loving all of life (natural world). Focusing on “the power of the mind” to change external realities is not only a distraction from this true spiritual growth, but it also ignores the presence of the cadre of spirits (ancestral and guiding) that interplay with our reality and are the ones that selectively decide which of our prayers and requests should be carried based on how they are aligned with our soul contracts.

These notions of our thoughts influencing our reality are nothing new. Religious people call them prayers. Witches call them spells. Magicians call it magic. In all cases, it is the same thing – focused attention of one’s consciousness has power. Indigenous healers have been doing this for tens of thousands of years. But what indigenous people know is that it is not the power of the individual that creates change in the external environment. Rather, it is the power of the helping spirits that align themselves with us to help us on our path, or to help us make the world a better place. There are countless stories of shamans who started to use that power for ill, and whose powers were then taken away because the spirits refused to cooperate.

This is why the Law of Attraction simply does not work in most cases – because mostly people are using it for selfish gain and not to a spiritual end. This is also why this cannot be called a science: results are not consistent or reproducible.

This idea of “my mind influences my external reality” is an isolating one. It takes away a notion of God, spirit guides, ancestors, and even of the concept that one’s own soul set out for us to learn specific lessons in this lifetime. The Law of Attraction and add-ons to it are emotionally and spiritually impoverishing and isolating. We are tribal people. All studies on psychological well-being and happiness point to the need for us to feel interconnected. Interdependency is a must for humans.

It is much more psychologically healthy and emotionally stabilizing for people to understand that they are a part of a larger spiritual ecology, that uncomfortable things in life happen for a reason (not because of their negative thoughts), and that when something magical happens, it is an act of love from an unseen intelligence.

The Law of Attraction and similar notions are the symptoms of a generation of people who have sterilized themselves of any cultural or spirituality by rejecting their largely Christian upbringings and who have thrown out the baby with the bathwater. Words like God, Jesus, and Church are taboo, and so the slate is blank and there’s a desire to start fresh. This trend, combined with the Western obsession with science, and the American obsessions with individualism and becoming rich and famous, is perfectly answered by the Law of Attraction. But science has no heart, individualism is isolating, and materialism is disappointing. Likewise, the Law of Attraction will keep people feeling scared, isolated, self-loathing (when the LOA doesn’t work), and disappointed. They’d might as well be back in Church.

I encourage people to explore real spiritual paths that have long standing traditions and fully developed philosophies and methodologies. Study world religions. Study shamanism. Study Spiritualism. These two in particular are wonderful traditions that are non-hierarchical but that teach you how to develop your own connection with the Divine. Both of these traditions are also holistic in their focus on equality of all people, and, moreso in shamanism, reverence for nature. Step beyond the catch phrases, the sales pitches, and the pseudoscience, and into true connection, inspiration, and joy.

    2. Andrew, I truly empathize with your concerns for the environment and man’s spiritual development. I also have Spiritualist ties in my unfoldment, and knowledge of the various guides and teachers of which you speak.

But I’ve never known of any (actually) usurping an individual’s God-given free will – which IS your creative power – and replacing it with their own judgment. Rather they counsel.

I don’t think our species would have made it very far down ANY of the dark roads it’s traveled, had a superior wisdom actively over-ruled the choices history records.

And those who pick-up on the commercialized get-rich-quick interpretation of the law won’t go very far either – still only trying to manipulate a basic MISUNDERSTANDING of how the universe really works: an intact belief in the disconnected isolation you mention; hence thinking one’s gain must be at another one’s loss.

My personal discovery of how my thinking affects the world around me has made me MORE aware of our interconnectedness, not less.

  8. Amazing Pam. Your post is outstanding and provide subtle insight into knowledge and power of thoughts. It made me rethink what I have been thinking unconsciously.
It came at right time or rather I attracted it.
Thank you Pam, thanks a centillion.
    God bless you, you rock!

  9. I know this is all true! It’s been about 3 months of immersion into Law of Attraction. I thought I had made amazingly large strides sweeping out old patterns of financial scarcity and nurturing the financial abundance I KNOW I have already created, felt, smelled and seen in my mind’s eye and my heart of hearts. I’ve spent a lot of time dreaming of dollars coming to me, popping out of the stream I have created in response to my desire, feeling grateful, feeling rich, feeling free. Meeting any doubt or negative thought with non-resistance and allowing it to pass through, reinforcing my creation of wealth and knowing it’s here now, everywhere, expecting it’s arrival to my material realm at any moment.

Today my husband revealed some potentially catastrophic financial news he withheld from me for the past few days, only because I just had surgery and he didn’t want to lay that jolt on me. We’ve been hit with several financial blows in the last 6 months but I’ve truly been peaceful inside, focusing on abundance throughout. Now this? Really thought I was doing fabulously with my vibrational shifting. I’m pretty dumbfounded at this moment….

Yet, what’s the answer? I can only allow this to pass through as well, and keep believing in the inevitability of seeing my creations of financial abundance manifest. The alternative, for sure, would only impede my progress.
