Let the universe do the heavy lifting, 2.0

“I don’t have to be perfect. I just have to show up and enjoy the messy, imperfect and beautiful journey of my life.”– Kerry Washington

It happened again—three emails in a few short days from folks who are wondering what to do if they don’t immediately get their blessing from Experiment One. So I want to share this story.

I wrote E-Squared 9 years ago. It was originally called God Doesn’t Have Bad Hair Days and I loved it with all my heart. I affirmed that it would be a bestseller. I made the intention that Oprah would snatch it up and invite me on her show.

Instead, it did a monster-sized belly flop into the great sea of literary has-beens. It quickly went out of print, one of only two of my 16 books to ever do so.

In fact, my editor (of that book) said, “I just don’t understand it. This book is just like The Secret.”

Yes, my book debuted at the exact same time as the movie, The Secret, a whole year before the book, The Secret, came out.

So here’s what I did? I let it go. I waved the white flag and began focusing on other stuff. I wrote three travel books for National Geographic. I wrote this really cool TV series about an ecovillage. I did everything I could think of to keep open the channels of joy and abundance.

Now I’m not suggesting that I never crashed or walked through a few valleys, or ever bought into the recession and the continual bad news about my chosen career. I even wrote a piece about it for Huffington Post that you can read here.

But instead of pitching a tent in the land of “poor me,” I kept believing. I kept recognizing that it was only me that could block the world’s largesse. It was only me who could build walls to keep my good away.

My only job, the way I see it, is to enjoy every moment of my imperfect, messy, beautiful life.

And guess what? The book was polished up a bit and came out this year as E-Squared. And all those things I affirmed earlier. They’re coming to fruition, just like I envisioned them.

So I will repeat here, what I wrote last time I got the question: “What if I make an intention and it doesn’t happen?”

First and foremost, DO NOT BEAT YOURSELF UP! Do not ask yourself, “What am I doing wrong?” Do not make the erroneous conclusion that the universe does not have your back.

In fact, the very best tact when you’re unable to find your intention is to say, “THANK YOU!!!” “Thank you for showing me that I still have..…oh, maybe just a tad bit of resistance.”

And then go out and do something really fun, something that makes you sing with joy. If you can’t think of even one thing that makes you smile, that’s a sure sign your channels of love and joy are not as open as they could be. Again, no biggie. Feel free to borrow one of the many things I do when I notice my channels are blocked with twigs of negativity and self-doubt:

** Dance around the house. Put on some lively music and go for it.

** Get a stack of dollar bills and go out and give them away. I know a guy who uses hundys, but I’m still more comfortable using ones.

** Sing a happy song as loud as you possibly can.

Your only job (and that word probably demonstrates part of the problem) is to go out and get happy.

When you’re happy, life works. In fact, number one on my hit parade of intentions is something I borrowed from Yogi Bhajan: “To make myself so happy that others get happy just looking at me.”

When manifesting, you’ve undoubtedly heard that “How is not up to you.” These days, I’m not even so sure “What” is the best strategy. I prefer to focus on “Why?”

Why do I want money? So I can have an amazingly awesome time.

Why do I want to write books and blog posts? So I can use my God-given gifts.

Why do I want a meaningful, expanding relationship? So I can be a more loving person.

That’s what all of us really want—to have an amazingly awesome time, to use our gifts, to be loving human beans. And I’ve discovered that when I start “being” those things, the “whats” flow like a hawk in a tail wind.

The universe wants to give us every good thing. It is only our resistance that stops it from stampeding towards us like a herd of wild mustangs.

  1. Thank you for writing this! I’m going to pass it on to my groupies too 😉

I do have to ask – do you believe ANYTHING is Universally orchestrated as in “meant to be’s” and “divine timing” or that your reality is 100% no exceptions, intention and vibration?

    You rock, xo a

    1. Probably the only thing I know for sure is that I don’t know. I believe there is universal orchestration, I suppose, but I think we affect what we let our particular orchestra score and play. And as for rocking, right back at ya!

      1. If you’re familiar with Tom T Moore’s work on benevolent out comes, saying benevolent prayers only work for stakeholders at times when they benefit all parties. Perhaps it is the same with the universe or God. My personal belief is that when I don’t manifest something it is b/c I am doing something or something better is going to happen. For an experiment you could add the phrase “and may the results be even better than I can hope for or expect, thank you”.

    2. My two cents on your question:

I don’t see how there could be hard lines actually drawn anywhere – except those seeming barriers we make up for ourselves; believing some can be broken; some can’t – then changing our minds again as we grow in awareness.

There’s a place in A Course In Miracles that says the only sacrifice God wants you to make is your sense of separation from Him.

So, if you believe that with God all things are possible, then it must also follow that nothing less than Wholeness – which has no limits – is ever “meant” to be.

But, of course, the world teaches otherwise. How else could the “Law of Probabilities,” for example – which says the Universe is at best indifferent – appear to successfully step between you and God’s Will for you?

  2. Great post, best timing to read it for me is when I read it *ha, *ha, *ha (*practising being happy)
I feel great, thanks Pam g. For being you!

  3. I have that book, love it, used your experiments and they worked!!!!! I am now wanting my health to be awesome….still wanting to be independant woman so I say it daily all day, more money coming in than going out…I love your book so much, it is funny too!!!! Tear the page out…have a great day! toni

  4. This book is extraordinary!! Planning on having my kids (12 & 15) do the exercises this summer. Shared it with my friends too!

  5. I was listening to Esther Hick’s interview on the recent Hay House World Summit.

She pointed out that the vibration of the question is much different than the vibration of the answer, but most stay focused on the question – therefore not allowing the answer to come forth.

I continue to forward your posts to my wife, Pam. And she’s read some of the others, but really likes your writing as unique (in her words). I agree.

  6. I’m so glad you decided to comment on this, Pam.
I forgot the name of the experiment where you expect to see butterflies. I chose yellow butterflies, and they did not arrive within the timeframe, however I don’t get out much these days, lol.

So what it took, was, an email from an expert on sexual health that I subscribe to, who notified his list that he had a new video to explain a particular aspect of sex. The video began with him struggling to start his lecture, because there was an onslaught of butterflies. (haha, yes) And the description on top of the video (it was his own web page, where he embedded the youtube clip), he specifically apologized for the *yellow* butterflies interrupting the beginning.

When the Universe sees a great opp, (and it sees everything), it’ll take that opp and It will know you won’t mind if it’s a little late.

  7. Love this post. Really aligns with where I’m at right now.

I’ve been very aware lately that my mind automatically gravitates to the place of “fixing” perceived problems, which inevitably leaves me focused on what I don’t want.

The change for me has come in recognizing that when my mind is going into “fix it” mode, I need to refocus my attention on what I want instead. This has been a big paradigm shift for me!

    Thank you for the reaffirmation.

  8. I’m doin’ the E(Squared) thingy;
Day 1 – Blessing – I opened a new bank account yesterday, and for me such things are always painful and drawn out. Yesterday – In and out in 20 minutes. I’ll count that every time.
Day 2 – Blue cars (I don’t even know what the color is that mentioned in the book.. I’m a guy, so primary colors only please.) Not too many more than normal, but they seemed to be trying to get my attention by driving tooo slow or cutting me off. I’ll take it. (NOTE: There are NO yellow butterflies in or around my office…I already checked, so I think I gotcha)

  9. Day 3 – No butterflies. I suspect the heat and humidity killed them. I was blessed with great traffic going to work.

I’ll give the butterflies one more day.

  10. Recently heard Michael Mirdad speak at a Unity Church in MA. He spoke about: not taking things literally but figuratively; and the most important question to ask is why, and keep asking it until there are no more answers. I’m a new fan Pam, thank you!

    1. Thank you, Denise. I’m so grateful to all my readers who have helped the book place #2 on the New York Times bestseller list (advice, self-help and miscellaneous). I’m super excited.

  11. Hi Pam, your book was recommended to us by Wayne Dyer at the “I can do it! – Sydney” conference last weekend. I have just completed the first experiment, nothing showed up in 48 hours, but I did have some very vivid dreams about 1 – getting a bicycle and 2 – getting a job offer. Does this mean I am half way there?

    1. Hey Brett,

I believe the blessing has been created and that it’s circling, waiting for the moment you’re ready. Time is an illusion anyway and the 48 hours is a tool for jarring us into paying attention. Your blessing will arrive soon of that I can guarantee–as long as you don’t block it.

      1. Hi Pam,

How can we tell if we are blocking, and what can we do about it? I.E. Stop blocking. I am having mixed success, and I know that it is only some minor adjustment, I just don’t know what to adjust or how.

      2. Little tweaks in consciousness are all it takes. That it’s easy to be open to good, that joy is our natural state, that you are going to get this the moment you let go of worry.

      3. Hi Pam

Thanks for your advice – I did actually change jobs a month later. And I decided to buy myself a bike for Christmas anyway (just as I bought a bike a friend of mine told me she was going to get me one for Christmas anyway! I think I meddled in this creation).

  12. Excellent. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
P.S. In the second to last paragraph you write: …to be loving human beans…
I think you meant to write …. to be loving human beings. 🙂

      1. Yes. I figured you were referring to the little known-theory of “beanism,” in which the bodies of most mammals (w/o the appendages) appear bean-like in shape. A horse, for example.

  13. George Roberts Jr., you should be a comedian (or an environmental activist… or maybe both!) Now I can’t get the image of Monsanto-owned beans that grow into humans, out of my head!

  14. Thanks for writing this. 48 hours of the first experiment passed without any results and I have to say that I was pretty frustrated. I want so much to believe in the FP, as you call it, and really I feel I’ve manifested many things I’ve wanted for myself. But like most people, I’m sure, I want proof. And that’s why I was so excited to come across your book and couldn’t wait to start the experiments. When nothing happened and I read all the other “success” stories on your blog I felt even more wretched! But then I read this and agree with you that I can’t just give up. That I’m not doing anything wrong. I just need to open my eyes (and heart) more and really believe.

I’m sure I’ll have better things to share next time.

    🙂

  15. Like the last post, I got nothing after 48 hours. I was expecting for it to work, since I have coincidences and good luck all the time! However, I am visiting a relative and cannot do anything on my own. Finding something “fun” or happy to do is not an option until I get home. I don’t know if that has something to do with it. I did enjoy the book though. I will try again when I arrive home.

  16. Hi Pam,
I’m wondering does the blessing or gift in experiment one have to be clearly a “gift”, or could I take my electricity flickering and then going off in my house for 5 seconds (no wind around) as a sign/blessing/gift?? This happened when my husband and I were discussing our dreams and the new direction our life is taking..

  17. I need a little advice.I have had success with most things I intend but there is one that is most important to me and I am not having any success.I need work and I want to work from home.Possibly my own business so I can be home with kids.I don’t have any idea what I could do as a business and I think that is whats tripping me up.That and the fact that I am in desperate need to make money because I am in a controlling relationship and I want to be able to take care of me and my kids on my own.Any ideas would be appreciated.

  18. It took me quite some time to finally have to read this wonderful book. I couldn’t find the hard copy in Nigeria bookshops so i settled for an eBook. I tried all the experiment except Experiment 3 and I the lab result was very positive.
Maybe you need to do a video of this book like the way we had it with “Secret”.
For my sake please re explain experiment 3 in very simple English.

    1. I couldn’t quite figure out the method for doing the experiment in #3, either. I need to see a picture of what the wire hanger is supposed to look like after you straighten it and bend it to an L shape. It sounds like an interesting experiment, though!

  19. I guess my question is how to proceed if I don’t see results in one of the experiments within the 48 hours. First experiment worked, received a gift. Second experiment I was bored with cars but saw tons of butterflies, calling that a success. Am on vacation so am waiting to return for third experiment because there are coat hangers at home. 4th experiment I set my intention, have been focusing on it, 48 hours and nothing. Do I keep working on it and give it more time, or do I change to another intention and try again, or do I move on to another experiment? Granted I picked something extremely difficult that has been challenging me for years, but now I’m not sure how or if to proceed? Any advice?

  20. Hi Pam
I like your books and your writing style after reading your books I felt much more presence of God around me your knowledge is vast and I must say you are blessed soul . I myself use affirmations and Law of attraction to attract so many good things in my life. I want to more about giving away dollar bills to attract more abundance it’s mentioned in you book E cubed as a 72 hour experiment would you please elaborate it but more as in 72 hours how many times we need to give away money bills. Thank you
    Love and Gratitude .
